TEDxTauranga
TEDxTauranga is an independent TEDx event held every 1–2 years in Tauranga, New Zealand. At TEDxTauranga, live speakers and entertainers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including TEDxTauranga, are self-organised by local volunteers. Other independently organised TEDx events in New Zealand include TEDxAuckland and TEDxWellington. TED is a nonprofit devoted to the philosophy of 'ideas worth spreading' through short, powerful talks that began in 1984, including topics related to 'Technology, Entertainment and Design'. Puawai Cairns
Puawai Cairns is a curator, writer and museum manager who holds a senior role at Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand. Puawai Cairns is Māori and affiliates to the nations Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Pūkenga. TEDxAuckland is an independent TEDx event held annually in Auckland, New Zealand. Like other TEDx events, the event obtained a free license from TED to hold the conference, with organizers agreeing to follow certain principles. In May 2016, TEDxAuckland hosted 28 speakers at the Shed 10 venue on the waterfront in Auckland. History TEDxAuckland was founded as an independent TEDx event by producer Elliott Blade. The fourth edition was held in August 2013, with speakers scheduled such as local cook Robert Oliver. Blade continued to organize, stating the previous event in 2012 had been sold out. TED Conferences, LLC (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is an American-Canadian non-profit media organization that posts international talks online for free distribution under the slogan "ideas worth spreading". Meng Liu Foon (born ) is a New Zealand politician who served as the mayor of Gisborne from 2001 to 2019. Since August 2019, he has been New Zealand's race relations commissioner. He is one of a handful of people of Chinese descent to have become a mayor in New Zealand. He is fluent in English, Cantonese and Māori. James Russell (ecologist)
James Charles Russell is a New Zealand conservation biologist and professor at the University of Auckland. Russell is most widely known for his research on Norway rats (''Rattus norvegicus'') in New Zealand. One of the rats he studied swam over 400 metres between two Hauraki Gulf islands, breaking the swimming distance record for rats. The intentions of the rat are believed to have been amorous. The rat, known as Razza, was featured in '' Nature (journal), Nature'', and later in a children's book by Witi Ihimaera. Russell gained a PhD on the genetics and invasion ecology of rats, from the University of Auckland. He writes a blog for National Geographic on island conservation.
