Sungai Petani Railway Station
The Sungai Petani railway station is a Malaysian train station located at and named after the city of Sungai Petani. The station is on Keretapi Tanah Melayu's West Coast Line (Malaysia), West Coast Line and is served by the KTM ETS and the KTM Komuter Northern Sector services. It was also previously served by the International Express. The station was rebuilt under the Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrification and Double-Tracking Project (EDTP) and became operational on 10 June 2014. On 11 September 2015, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad introduced the Northern Sector KTM Komuter Shuttle (Tren Shuttle KTM Komuter Sektor Utara in Bahasa Malaysia) service between Gurun in Kedah, Butterworth in Pulau Pinang and Kamunting in Perak. Sungai Petani ( abbr. Sg. Petani or SP; Jawi: سوڠاي ڤتاني) is a city in Kuala Muda District, Kedah, Malaysia. Sungai Petani is Kedah's largest city and is located about 55 km south of Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, and 33 km northeast of George Town, the capital city of the neighbouring state of Penang. Etymology The name of the municipality is taken from the name of a river, which is ''Sungai Petani'' (Petani River), a tributary of Merbok River. The word ''Petani'' might be related to the province of Pattani in Thailand. The word is said to derive from a Sanskrit word 'pathini', meaning "virgin nymph"; Pathini was the name of a daughter of Merong Mahawangsa, founder of the preceding Langkasuka Empire. KTM Komuter Northern Sector
The ''KTM Komuter Northern Sector'' ( ms, KTM Komuter Sektor Utara) is one of the five KTM Komuter services run by Malaysian rail operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu. The service was introduced on 11 September 2015 following the completion of the Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrification and Double-Tracking Project in December 2014, which also saw the extension of the ETS service to Padang Besar from Ipoh. KTM ETS
The KTM ETS (commercially known as ETS, short for 'Electric Train Service') is an inter-city rail passenger service operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) using electric multiple-unit (EMU) trains. The KTM ETS is the second electric train service to be operated by the Malaysian railway company, after the KTM Komuter service, and the second inter-city rail service, after KTM Intercity. The ETS is the fastest metre-gauge train service in Malaysia and operates along the electrified and double-tracked stretch of the West Coast Line between and in Peninsular Malaysia, which was previously served by KTM Intercity. Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) (Jawi: كريتاڤي تانه ملايو برحد) or Malayan Railways Limited is the main rail operator in Peninsular Malaysia. The railway system dates back to the British colonial era, when it was first built to transport tin. Previously known as the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR) and the Malayan Railway Administration (MRA), Keretapi Tanah Melayu acquired its current name in 1962. West Coast Line (Malaysia)
The West Coast railway line runs from Padang Besar railway station close to the Malaysia–Thailand border in Perlis (where it connects with the State Railway of Thailand) to Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore. It is called the West Coast railway line because it serves the West Coast states of Peninsular Malaysia. International Express
The ''International Express'' ( th, รถด่วนพิเศษระหว่างประเทศ; ms, Ekspres Antarbangsa) is an express train between Bangkok, Thailand and Padang Besar, Malaysia. The train formerly traveled to Butterworth, Penang. This train's passenger cars include 2nd-class air conditioned sleepers, and an air conditioned dining car. Kuala Muda District
The Kuala Muda District is a district in Kedah, Malaysia. Sungai Petani is the administrative center of the district. Kuala Muda district is in close proximity to the border of Kedah and Penang.
