Spas, Kalush Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
Spas ( uk, Спас) is a village in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine, located in Kalush Raion. It is the administrative centre of Spas rural hromada. Its population is 1,820 (). History The village of Spas was first mentioned in 1469. Two wooden churches were built in the village in the 18th century, one of which (the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, built in 1752) has survived to the present day. In 1939, according to Volodymyr Kubijovyč, the village had a population of 2,750; 2,650 of these people were Ukrainians, 40 were Polish people, 40 were Jews, and the remaining 20 were Germans and of other ethnicities. A monument to five Ukrainian Insurgent Army soldiers who were killed in the village was erected in 2019. Hero of Ukraine (HOU; uk, Герой України, ''Heroi Ukrainy'') is the highest national title that can be conferred upon an individual citizen by the President of Ukraine. The title was created in 1998 by President Leonid Kuchma and as of 11 December 2022 the total number of awards is 687; some decrees on the assignment of the title Hero of Ukraine were not published. The title is granted to two different order recipients: the civilian Order of the State, and the military Order of the Gold Star. The title Hero of the Soviet Union (russian: Герой Советского Союза, translit=Geroy Sovietskogo Soyuza) was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union, awarded together with the Order of Lenin personally or collectively for heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society. Overview The award was established on 16 April 1934, by the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union. The first recipients of the title originally received only the Order of Lenin, the highest Soviet award, along with a certificate (грамота, ''gramota'') describing the heroic deed from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Wooden church architecture in Ukraine dates from the beginning of Christianity in the area and comprises a set of unique styles and forms specific to many sub-regions of the country. As a form of vernacular culture, construction of the churches in specific styles is passed on to subsequent generations. The architectural styles vary from very simple to complicated, involving a high degree of carpentry and wood-cutting artistry.
