Sloan, New York
Sloan is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area and is in the town of Cheektowaga. History The village was incorporated in 1896 from part of Cheektowaga. With the CSX Frontier yard to the village's north and the Norfolk Southern Bison yard to the village's south, it was a historically important railroad town like nearby Depew. (These yards were originally the New York Central and Erie-Lackawanna, respectively.) For much of its history the village had a police force ranging from three to six officers. The force was abolished circa 1978, and the four patrolmen and one captain were absorbed by the Cheektowaga Police Department, which to this day provides police services to the village. Cheektowaga () is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town has grown to a population of 89,877. The town is in the north-central part of the county, and is an inner ring suburb of Buffalo. The town is the second-largest suburb of Buffalo, after the Town of Amherst. The town of Cheektowaga contains the village of Sloan and half of the village of Depew. The remainder, outside the villages, is a census-designated place also named Cheektowaga. The town is home to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, Erie County's principal airport. Villa Maria College, Empire State College, and the Walden Galleria are in Cheektowaga. New York State Route 240 (NY 240) is a state highway in western New York in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 242 in the Ellicottville community of Ashford Junction in northern Cattaraugus County. Its northern terminus is at a junction with NY 324 and Interstate 290 (I-290) in Amherst in northern Erie County. New York State Route 130 (NY 130) is a state highway entirely within Erie County, New York, in the United States. It runs east–west from U.S. Route 62 (US 62, named Bailey Avenue) in Buffalo to the village of Depew, where it terminates at US 20 and NY 78 (Transit Road). Throughout this course, NY 130 is named Broadway, a roadway name that continues eastward beyond Depew even after NY 130 ends. Jerome Stanley Augustyniak (born September 2, 1958) is the drummer for the American alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Augustyniak joined the band in March 1983, two years after the group formed. Visniak was a brand of soft drinks made by the "Saturn-Visniak Beverage Co." in Sloan, New York; the name of the brand was taken from the Polish word "wiśnia" for "cherry". The company was founded in 1959, and closed in 2004, dissolving in 2009. Description The label of the bottle said: "Pure, Healthful, Refreshing Beverage. Made with purified water, pure cane sugar and citric acid. Made in a modern, sanitary daylight plant". Visniak had several flavors, including: Cherry, Birch Beer, Ginger Ale, Club Soda, Cream Soda, Cola, Diet Cola, and Grapefruit drink. The sizes were 7½ oz splits and 23.5 ounce bottles. The Erie Lackawanna Railway , known as the Erie Lackawanna Railroad until 1968, was formed from the 1960 merger of the Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. The official motto of the line was "The Friendly Service Route". Like many railroads in the northeast already financially vulnerable from the expanding U.S. Interstate Highway System, the line was severely weakened fiscally by the extent, duration and record flood levels due to Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
