Simerini (newspaper)
''I Simerini'' (English language, English: The Daily) is a centre-right Greek language independently owned newspaper published in Cyprus since 1976. It is one of the largest newspapers on the island with a daily circulation of around 9,000 copies. Other daily Greek language newspapers (2013) published in Cyprus are ''Haravgi'', ''Phileleftheros'', and ''Politis (Cyprus), Politis''. The paper's motto reads: "Όποιος Ελεύθερα Συλλογάται Συλλογάται Καλά" ("Opios Elefthera Silogate, Silogate Kala") which translates into English as "He who thinks freely, thinks well" a quote taken from Rigas Feraios. Tabloid (newspaper Format)
A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. The connotation of ''tabloid'' was soon applied to other small compressed items. A 1902 item in London's ''Westminster Gazette'' noted, "The proprietor intends to give in tabloid form all the news printed by other journals." Thus ''tabloid journalism'' in 1901, originally meant a paper that condensed stories into a simplified, easily absorbed format. ''Haravgi'' ( el, Χαραυγή / "Dawn") is a Greek language newspaper published in Cyprus since 1956. Phileleftheros
''O Phileleftheros'' ( el, Ὁ Φιλελεύθερος, meaning "The Liberal") is the largest newspaper (by circulation) in Cyprus, with about 26,000 copies daily (2002). Established in 1955, it is also the oldest Greek-language daily newspaper in circulation on the island. Other daily newspapers published in Cyprus include '' Politis,'' ''Simerini'', ''Haravgi'', and ''Alithia''. Over the years, ''Phileleftheros'' has expanded into a publishing company and has released several magazines (including the Cyprus editions of ''Cosmopolitan'' and ''Top Gear''), as well as recently launching its own radio station, Radio Sfera. Rigas Feraios ( el, Ρήγας Φεραίος , sometimes ''Rhegas Pheraeos''; rup, Riga Fereu) or Velestinlis (Βελεστινλής , also transliterated ''Velestinles''); 1757 – 24 June 1798), born as Antonios Rigas Velestinlis ( el, Αντώνιος Ρήγας Βελεστινλής), was a Greek writer, political thinker and revolutionary, active in the Modern Greek Enlightenment. A victim of the Balkan uprising against the Ottoman Empire and a pioneer of the Greek War of Independence, Rigas Feraios is today remembered as a national hero in Greece.
