Sidney Kidman
Sir Sidney Kidman (9 May 18572 September 1935), known as Sid Kidman and popularly named "the Cattle King", was an Australian pastoral farming, pastoralist and entrepreneur who owned or co-owned large areas of land in Australia in his lifetime. Early life Sidney Kidman was born on 9 May 1857 in Adelaide, in the colony of South Australia, the third son of George Kidman (died December 1857), farmer, and his wife Elizabeth Mary, née Nunn. Kidman was educated at private schools in Norwood, South Australia, Norwood and left his home near Adelaide at age 13 with only five shillings and a one-eyed horse that he had bought with his savings. Kapunda
Kapunda is a town on the Light River and near the Barossa Valley in South Australia. It was established after a discovery in 1842 of significant copper deposits. The population was 2,917 at the 2016 Australian census. The southern entrance to the town has been dominated since 1988 by the statue of Map Kernow ("the son of Cornwall"), a traditional Cornish miner. The statue was destroyed by a fire in June 2006 but was rebuilt. History Francis Dutton and Charles Bagot, who both ran sheep in the area, discovered copper ore outcrops in 1842. They purchased around the outcrop, beginning mining early in 1844 after good assay results. Mining began with the removal of surface ore and had progressed to underground mining by the end of the year. Copper was mined until 1879. Victoria River Downs Station, also known as Victoria Downs and often referred to as The Big Run, is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the Northern Territory of Australia. Carlton Hill Station
Carlton Hill Station is a pastoral lease and cattle station located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Situated approximately to the north-west of Kununurra and east of Wyndham, the station covers an area of . The property lies on the land of the Gajirrawoong and Miriwung peoples, whose native title was recognised by the Federal Court of Australia in 2006. Austral Downs
Austral Downs Station most commonly known as Austral Downs is a cattle station on the Barkly Tableland in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is situated approximately west of Camooweal and north west of Mount Isa. Description The Station occupies an area of and has a carrying capacity of approximately 42,000 head of Santa Gertrudis crossed with Angus crossed with Wagyu cattle. The station is run by the Australian Agricultural Company in combination with Avon Downs with an area of ; together the properties turn off an average of 25,000 head per year. Eringa Station
Eringa Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the outback of South Australia, once owned by Sir Sidney Kidman. Its land is gazetted as a locality called Eringa in 2013. It is situated south of Aputula and east of Kulgera. The area is hilly and has a better average rainfall than much of the surrounding country. The rarely dry waterhole, the Eringa waterhole, was once situated within the boundaries of the station. History Established at some time prior to 1879 it was owned by Arthur Treloar and J. J. Channel Country
The Channel Country is a region of outback Australia mostly in the state of Queensland but also in parts of South Australia, Northern Territory and New South Wales. The name comes from the numerous intertwined rivulets that cross the region, which cover 150,000 km². The Channel Country is over the Cooper and Eromanga geological basins and the Lake Eyre Basin drainage basin. Further to the east is the less arid Maranoa district. Annandale Station
Annandale Station most commonly known as Annandale is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in central west Queensland. It is located on the tribal lands of the Wongkamala. The property is located west Birdsville and south of Boulia in the Channel Country of Queensland. History The station was the first established in the area when Patrick Drinan took up the run in July 1876. Other properties were settled soon afterwards including Kaliduwarry and Glengyle Stations. The station was named after his family's estate, ''Annandale'', in Gladstone. Drinan sold the property to the Collins brothers the following year. Cowarie Station
Cowarie Station most commonly known as Cowarie is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in north east South Australia. The property is located north of Marree and south west of Birdsville. The Diamantina River merges with the Mulligan River on Cowarie forming the Warburton River which continues to flow to the south west and into Lake Eyre. History The lease was initially granted for 21 years to William Benjamin Rounsevell starting on the last day of 1875, covering an area of and named Cowarie after a nearby hill. The name is Aboriginal in origin and is the name for marsupial rat common to the area. Many other leases in the area were also soon taken up leading to much greater traffic along the Birdsville track and a post office opened at Cowarie in 1877.
