Shire Of Moorabool
The Shire of Moorabool is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the western part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 34,158. It includes the towns of Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, Balliang, Mount Wallace, Myrniong, Blackwood, Greendale, Gordon, Korweinguboora and Mount Egerton, Bungaree, Elaine and Wallace. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Bacchus Marsh, Shire of Ballan and parts of the Shire of Bungaree and City of Werribee. The Shire is governed and administered by the Moorabool Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Ballan, it also has service centres located in Bacchus Marsh and Darley. The Shire of Bungaree was a local government area northeast of the regional city of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1863 until 1994. History Bungaree was first incorporated as a road district on 16 January 1863, and became a shire on 27 January 1871. The shire was originally divided into three ridings in August 1879, but after it lost a small section to the City of Ballaarat on 31 March 1930, it was redivided into two ridings. Elaine, Victoria
Elaine is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Midland Highway between Ballarat and Geelong. At the , Elaine and the surrounding area had a population of 228. The railway came through the town in 1862, with the opening of the Geelong-Ballarat line, but Elaine railway station was only opened ten years later, and was not provided with the grand bluestone buildings provided at the original stations on the line. Today, only freight trains use the line. The Post Office opened on 1 March 1859 as Mount Doran, and was renamed Elaine in 1872. Elaine Railway Station Post Office, some distance away, opened eleven days after the station, on 14 April 1873. Mount Egerton, Victoria
Mount Egerton is a historic gold mining town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the mountain by the same name in the Shire of Moorabool local government area, north west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Mount Egerton had a population of 582. It was named after settler George Egerton. The town's main street is Main Road which consists of the historic gold mine and battery, general store (now closed), and hall. The town also contains a primary school and recreational reserve. History George Egerton held approximately 35,000 acres of stock farming land in 1838 which to outsiders was known simply as "Egerton's run". The discovery of gold in 1853 by Alexander Russell and George Grell saw a gold rush in 1854 as placer mining took place along All Nations Gully and West Gully. Gordon, Victoria
Gordon is a small town in Victoria, Australia, named after settler George Gordon. The town is located on the Old Melbourne Road in the Shire of Moorabool local government area, west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Gordon had a population of 1,151. History George Gordon settled the area in 1838 with a 30,000 acre stock farming run which was known to outsiders as "Gordons". During the Victorian gold rush it prospered due to being at the main road junction to the nearby goldfields of All Nation's Gully and Mount Egerton. Gold was discovered in the district in 1853 including around the town itself and several gold mining operations continued extracting in the subsequent decades. The fledgling town had many Irish Australian settlers and those not involved in mining or commerce took up agriculture, notably potato farming.
