Shajarian
Mohammad-Reza Shajarian ( fa, محمدرضا شجريان; , 23 September 1940 – 8 October 2020) was an Iranian singer and master ('' Ostad'') of Persian traditional music. He was also known for his skills in Persian calligraphy and humanitarian activities. Shajarian started his singing career in 1959 at Radio Khorasan, rising to prominence in the 1960s with his distinct singing style. His main teachers were Ahmad Ebadi, Esmaeil Mehrtash, Abdollah Davami, and Nour-Ali Boroumand. He also learned the vocal styles of singers from previous generations, including Reza Gholi Mirza Zelli, Fariborz Manouchehri, Ghamar Molouk Vaziri, Eghbal Azar, and Taj Isfahani. He has cited legendary Persian tar soloist Jalil Shahnaz as highly influential to his development, indicating that he has often tried to mimic Shahnaz's playing style in his singing. Homayoun Shajarian
Homayoun Shajarian ( fa, همايون شجريان, born May 21, 1975) is an Iranian singer. He is the son of Mohammad-Reza Shajarian. Early life Shajarian was born in Tehran and is the son of Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, a grand master vocalist of Persian traditional music. At a young age, he began studying the tombak, a Persian hand drum, and Persian traditional vocal Avaz. Shajarian attended Tehran Conservatory of Music choosing Kamancheh as his professional instrument and was tutored by Ardeshir Kamkar. In 1991, he accompanied his father in concerts of Ava Music Ensemble in the United States, Europe and Iran, playing Tombak and from 1999 on, he started accompanying his father also on vocals. In 1995 he got married to Guitta Khansari, they have a child called Yasmine Shajarian who is born in 2007 in Tehran, Iran. They got divorced in 2015. Mojgan Shajarian ( fa, مژگان شجریان, born 17 May 1970) is an Iranian-born painter, graphic designer, vocalist, and setar player. She is daughter of musician Mohammad-Reza Shajarian. Early life and education Mojgan Shajarian was born on 17 May 1970 in Tehran. She holds a bachelor's degree in painting, and a master's degree in graphic communication from the Islamic Azad University, and also a bachelor's degree in music from the University of the Arts. Mohammad Reza Lotfi
Mohammad-Reza Lotfi ( fa, محمدرضا لطفی; 1 January 1947 – 2 May 2014) was an Iranian classical musician renowned for his mastery of the tar and setar. He collaborated with singers such as Mohammad-Rezā Shajarian, Hengameh Akhavan, Shahram Nazeri and Alireza Shahmohammadi. Life and career Encouraged by his older brother, he learned to play the tar and showed his talent by winning the first prize in Iran's Young Musicians Festival in 1964. The following year, he started his studies at the Persian National Music Conservatory in Tehran under Habibollah Salehi and Master Ali Akbar Shahnazi. He was a tar player for the Fine Arts Administration Orchestra (Saba Orchestra) under the direction of Hossein Dehlavi. Hossein Alizadeh
Hossein Alizadeh ( fa, حسین علیزاده) is an Iranian musician, composer, radif-preserver, researcher, teacher, and tar, shurangiz and setar instrumentalist and improviser. He has performed with such musicians as Shahram Nazeri, Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, Alireza Eftekhari and Jivan Gasparyan, as well as with a number of orchestras and ensembles. Music career Alizadeh was born in 1951 in Tehran. His father was from Urmia and his mother from Arak. As a teenager he attended secondary school at a music conservatory until 1975. His music studies continued at the University of Tehran, where his focus was composition and performance. He began postgraduate studies at the Tehran University of Art. Dariush Pirniakan
Daryoush Pirniakan (Persian: داریوش پیرنیاکان) (b. 1955 in East Azerbaijan) is an Iranian musician, tar and setar player, and music researcher. Biography Daryoush Pirniakan, a musician and composer of Persian classical genre, learned tar and setar under the supervision of Mohammad Hasan Ozari, maestro Ali-Akbar Shahnazi, Dr. Daryoush Safvat, Yousef Foroutan, Saeed Hormozi, and Mahmoud Karimi. While being a student of late maestro Ali Akbar khan Shahnazi, he had the honor to study radif of Mirza Hossein-gholi (Persian: میرزا حسینقلی) and Shahnazi's advanced level repertoire (radif). Mashhad
Mashhad ( fa, مشهد, Mašhad ), also spelled Mashad, is the second-most-populous city in Iran, located in the relatively remote north-east of the country about from Tehran. It serves as the capital of Razavi Khorasan Province and has a population of 3,001,184 (2016 census), which includes the areas of Mashhad Taman and Torqabeh. Aref Ensemble
The Aref Ensemble (in Persian: گروه عارف) was a Persian classical music ensemble. It was founded by maestro Parviz Meshkatian, Hossein Alizadeh, and Mohammad Reza Lotfi in 1977. The group was named after Aref Ghazvini, early 20th century Iranian poet and composer. Aref was dedicated to the promotion and advancement of Persian classical music. To some critics the Aref Ensemble, together with the Sheyda Ensemble (also founded by Meshkatian), revolutionised Persian music. In 1992 Meshkatian and the Aref Ensemble won first prize in the ''Spirit of the Earth Festival'' in England. Parviz Meshkatian (Persian: پرويز مشكاتيان; May 15, 1955 – September 21, 2009) was an Iranian musician, composer, researcher and university lecturer. Biography Born in Nishapur, Meshkatian entered the Tehran Academy of Arts, where he studied music theory and was introduced to ''radif'' (the Persian classical music repertoire) by the masters Nour Ali Boroumand, Dariush Safvat, Mohammad Taghi Massoudieh, and Mehdi Barkeshli. He focused on the ''radif'' of Mirza Abdollah for santur and setar. Meshkatian was one of the founding members of the Aref Ensemble, founded in 1977, as well as the Sheyda Ensemble. Ahmad Ebadi
Ahmad Ebādi (1906 – 1993) ( Persian: احمد عبادی) was an Iranian musician and setar player. Born in Tehran, he was a member of the most extraordinary family of Iranian music. Ahmad's father, Mirza Abdollah, is arguably the most influential figure in Persian traditional music, and his paternal uncle, Mirza Hossein Gholi, is also well known for his mastery in playing the tar. Ahmad's paternal grandfather, Ali Akbar Farahani, was also a talented musician. Ahmad started learning music at an early age. At the age of seven, he was able to play tombak to accompany his father. Unfortunately he lost his father soon thereafter, but continued his education with his sisters, especially Moloud Khanom. He became one of the best setar players of all time. Jalil Shahnaz (22 May 1921 – 17 June 2013; Persian: جلیل شهناز) was a Persian classical music musician and a virtuoso of the Persian musical instrument, tar. Biography Jalil Shahnaz was born in 1921 in Isfahan, Persia (Iran). Shahnaz studied under the supervision of his brother, Hossein Shahnaz, and befriended Hassan Kassai, a ney player. The Tomb of Ferdowsi ( fa, آرامگاه فردوسی, ''Ârâmgâh-e Ferdowsi'') is a tomb complex composed of a white marble base, and a decorative edifice erected in honor of the Persian poet Ferdowsi located in Tus, Iran, in Razavi Khorasan province.
