Scott Waldman
Scott A. Waldman is an MD and biomedical scientist at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, where he is the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Professor of Medicine, and also tenured professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. He is author of a pharmacology textbook, and former chief editor of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. He is known for his work in atrial natriuretic factor intracellular signaling through guanylate cyclase (GC), and the relation of Guanylyl cyclase C (GC-C) to the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Also for his hypotheses concerning the roles of intestinal paracrine hormones (uroguanylin, guanylin) in satiety, obesity and cancer risk. Uroguanylin
Uroguanylin is a 16 amino acid peptide that is secreted by enterochromaffin cells in the duodenum and proximal small intestine. Guanylin acts as an agonist of the guanylyl cyclase receptor guanylate cyclase 2C (GC-C), and regulates electrolyte and water transport in intestinal and renal epithelia. By agonizing this guanylyl cyclase receptor, uroguanylin and guanylin cause intestinal secretion of chloride and bicarbonate to dramatically increase; this process is helped by the second messenger cGMP. Its sequence is H-Asn-Asp-Asp-Cys(1)-Glu-Leu-Cys(2)-Val-Asn-Val-Ala-Cys(1)-Thr-Gly-Cys(2)-Leu-OH. In humans, the uroguanylin peptide is encoded by the ''GUCA2B'' gene. National Academy Of Inventors
The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) is a US non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging inventors in academia, following the model of the National Academies of the United States. It was founded at the University of South Florida in 2010. Starting in 2012, the NAI has inducted 757 Fellows into the organization. Fellows must be named as an inventor on at least one US patent and are selected by the NAI Fellows Committee. In epidemiology, a risk factor or determinant is a variable associated with an increased risk of disease or infection. Due to a lack of harmonization across disciplines, determinant, in its more widely accepted scientific meaning, is often used as a synonym.
