Uroguanylin
Uroguanylin is a 16 amino acid peptide that is secreted by enterochromaffin cells in the duodenum and proximal small intestine. Guanylin acts as an agonist of the guanylyl cyclase receptor guanylate cyclase 2C (GC-C), and regulates electrolyte and water transport in intestinal and renal epithelia. By agonizing this guanylyl cyclase receptor, uroguanylin and guanylin cause intestinal secretion of chloride and bicarbonate to dramatically increase; this process is helped by the second messenger cGMP. Its sequence is H-Asn-Asp-Asp-Cys(1)-Glu-Leu-Cys(2)-Val-Asn-Val-Ala-Cys(1)-Thr-Gly-Cys(2)-Leu-OH. In humans, the uroguanylin peptide is encoded by the ''GUCA2B'' gene. Uroguanylin may be involved in appetite and perceptions of 'fullness' after eating meals, as suggested by a study into mice. Since 2013, the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association have released an annual report listing the top 100 universities by the number of US patents. The University of California has topped the list each year. The NAI has held a yearly national conference since 2011. In 2017, US Representative Dennis A. Ross introduced the bill HR 976, w ... Risk Factor
In epidemiology, a risk factor or determinant is a variable associated with an increased risk of disease or infection. Due to a lack of harmonization across disciplines, determinant, in its more widely accepted scientific meaning, is often used as a synonym. The main difference lies in the realm of practice: medicine (clinical practice) versus public health. As an example from clinical practice, low ingestion of dietary sources of vitamin C is a known risk factor for developing scurvy. Specific to public health policy, a determinant is a health risk that is general, abstract, related to inequalities, and difficult for an individual to control. For example, poverty is known to be a determinant of an individual's standard of health. Correlation vs causation Risk factors or determinants are correlational and not necessarily causal, because correlation does not prove causation. For example, being young cannot be said to cause measles, but young people have a higher rate of meas ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
