Santi Quirico e Giulitta, also called San Quirico in Castelvecchio is a Renaissance style, Roman Catholic parish church located in Pian de Mantellini in the Terzo de Citta of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. History The church is ancient, putatively founded in the 11th century on the foundations of an earlier pagan temple. It stands now as mostly rebuilt starting in 1598. The portico, and parts of the apse and sacristy retain some of the ancient traces. The entry lunette was frescoed by Ventura Salimbeni. Above the arch over the presbytery was painted by Stefano Volpi; the imposing ''Martyrdom of Saints Quriaqos and Julietta'' in the apse was also painted by Salimbeni. The ''Prayer in the Garden'', ''Fall of the Rebel Angels'', ''Four prophets and four evangelists'' in the apse, were painted by Cristoforo Casolani. The Roman Catholic titular church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta (Saints Quiricus and Julietta) in Rome is named after a son and mother who were martyred in 304 AD in Tarsus (city), Tarsus. The church is located in central Rome behind the Forum of Augustus. The address is Via di Tor de’ Conti 31/A, 00184. Today the church is administered by the Third Order of Saint Francis. The feast of Sts Quiricus and Julitta is celebrated on 16 June. History The first church here was built in the 6th century, under Pope Vigilius, and originally dedicated to Sts Saint Stephen, Stephen and Saint Lawrence, Lawrence the Deacons. It was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 14th century. The relics of St Cyriacus were translated here in 1475; they were later translated to the church of Santa Maria in Via Lata. Ventura di Archangelo Salimbeni (also later called Bevilacqua; 20 January 1568 – 1613) was an Italian Counter-Maniera painter and printmaker highly influenced by the ''vaghezza'' and sensual reform of Federico Barocci. Biography Salimbeni was born in Siena. He studied painting, together with his half-brother Francesco Vanni, under their father Arcangelo Salimbeni in his native Siena, He possibly spent some time, in Northern Italy and then moved to Rome in 1588 to work, together with others, on the fresco painting of the Vatican Library under pope Sixtus V. During 1590-1591, he received a commission from Cardinal Bonifazio Bevilacqua Aldobrandini for paintings in the Roman Jesuit Church of the Gesù and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Pietro Sorri (1558-1622) was an Italian painter active in Siena. Biography He first studied under Arcangelo Salimbeni (father of Ventura), and afterwards under Cavaliere Domenico Passignano, whom he accompanied to Venice. Several of his works are in Florence and other cities of Tuscany, particularly at Pisa; he painted landscapes and portraits as well as history. Among his pupils were Giovanni Stefano Rossi, Bernardo Strozzi, and Astolfo Petrozzi. He was also active in Lucca, Genoa, Milan, and Pavia.
