Samuel Grimes was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly Early life Samuel was born on 13 August 1837 at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England, and arrived in Queensland on the ship '' Chaseley'' in 1849. He was involved in farming in a number of areas around Moreton Bay from 1857 and was responsible for developing a sugar plantation on Hope Island in the Coomera River. Politics Grimes was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electorate of Oxley on 3 December 1878 in the 1878 Queensland election. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Ashby-de-la-Zouch
Ashby-de-la-Zouch, sometimes spelt Ashby de la Zouch () and shortened locally to Ashby, is a market town and civil parish in the North West Leicestershire district of Leicestershire, England. The town is near to the Derbyshire and Staffordshire borders. Its 2001 census population of 11,410 rose to 12,370 in 2011. The castle in the town was an important fort in the 15th–17th centuries. Hope Island is a suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hope Island had a population of 11,186 people. The town of Boykambil is within the suburb (). The Coomera River is a perennial river located in the South East region of Queensland, Australia. Its catchment lies within the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim Region local government areas and covers an area of . History This one-member electorate was created in the redistribution of 1872 (taking effect at the 1873 elections) from the electoral district of East Moreton. Thomas McIlwraith
Sir Thomas McIlwraith (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry. Early life Thomas McIlwraith was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1835, one of four sons of John McIlwraith, plumber and shipowner, and his wife Janet Hamilton ''née'' Howat.
