Saint Omer (film)
''Saint Omer'' is a 2022 French legal drama film directed by Alice Diop and starring Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanda. It is Diop's first narrative feature after working as a documentary filmmaker. In the film, Rama (Kagame) is a pregnant young novelist who attends the trial of Laurence Coly (Malanda), a Senegalese woman accused of murdering her 15-month-old child by leaving her on a beach to be swept away by the tide, in order to turn the tragic event into a literary retelling of Medea. It is based on the 2016 French court case of Fabienne Kabou, who was convicted of the same crime. Diop attended Kabou's trial. The film premiered in-competition at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on 7 September 2022, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize along with the Luigi De Laurentiis Lion of the Future award. Alice Diop
Alice Diop (b. 1979) is a French filmmaker, who makes films about contemporary French society. Early life and education Born in Aulnay-sous-Bois in 1979, daughter of Senegalese parents, Alice Diop was raised in the Cité des 3000 housing project In Aulnay-sous-Bois near Paris. At University, she began studying history, then studied sociology in Évry gaining her DESS degree. Fifteen years after leaving Aulnay-sous-Bois, she returned to film the cultural diversity of the area she grew up in for her first documentary ''La Tour du monde''. Metacritic is a website that review aggregator, aggregates reviews of films, TV shows, music albums, video games and formerly, books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted arithmetic mean, weighted average). Metacritic was created by Jason Dietz, Marc Doyle, and Julie Doyle Roberts in 1999. Rotten Tomatoes is an American review-aggregation website for film and television. The company was launched in August 1998 by three undergraduate students at the University of California, Berkeley: Senh Duong, Patrick Y. Lee, and Stephen Wang. Although the name "Rotten Tomatoes" connects to the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes in disapproval of a poor stage performance, the original inspiration comes from a scene featuring tomatoes in the Canadian film ''Léolo'' (1992).
