Synchronized Swimming At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's Duet
The Women's duet event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, took place at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center from 14 to 16 August. The preliminary phase consisted of a free routine, then a technical routine with required elements. The scores from the two routines were added together and the top twelve duets qualified for the final. The final repeated the same free routine and the score from the final free routine was added to the score from the preliminary technical routine to decide the overall winners. The medals were presented by Nicole Hoevertsz, IOC member, Aruba and Qiuping Zhang, Bureau Member of FINA. Qualification A total of twenty four duets qualified for the event. The eight National Olympic Committees (NOC) qualified for the team competition were automatically awarded a place for duets. Maria Lenk Aquatic Center
The Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre ( pt, Parque Aquático Maria Lenk) is an aquatics centre that is part of the City of Sports Complex in the Barra da Tijuca district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is part of the investments made by the city to host the swimming, synchronized swimming and diving competitions of the 2007 Pan American Games. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, it hosted group matches of water polo and the synchronised swimming and diving competitions. The name of the water park is a tribute to the Brazilian swimmer, Maria Lenk, who died less than three months before its inauguration. The water park was designed in accordance with established parameters and specifications of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Mariya Koroleva (born April 10, 1990) is a Russian-born American synchronized swimmer. After emigrating to the United States, Koroleva began participating in synchronized swimming, and competed at Stanford University. She was a member of the teams that won silver medals in the duet and team competitions at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. She competed at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. Anita M. Alvarez (born January 16, 1960) is the former State's Attorney for Cook County, Illinois, United States. Karine Thomas (born January 14, 1989) was a Canadian synchronized swimmer. Her parents were on the national water-polo team. Her grandmother, Esther Blais-Valin, was a synchronized swimmer in the 1940s and 50s. Career Thomas began synchronized swimming at age ten, at thirteen she moved to Montreal to further her training. Gemma Mengual
Gemma Mengual Civil (born 12 April 1977 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) is a Spanish synchronised swimmer. She has competed at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. On 15 February 2012 she announced her retirement. After retiring she became involved with coaching the national synchronised swimming team.
