Sunshine, Ontario
Sunshine is a dispersed rural community in the municipality of Morris-Turnberry, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. Sunshine prospered as a milling and manufacturing town from the 1850s to the 1880s. History The early settlement had a water-powered sawmill on the Maitland River. The mill later converted to steam power, and lumber from the mill was manufactured into chairs at a nearby factory. Two churches were located at Sunshine: Bethel Church, erected in 1855, and the Sunshine Methodist Church, which opened as a loghouse church. In 1875, Sunshine Methodist built a frame church which was later bricked. Sunshine had a blacksmith, general store, and post office which opened in 1874. Huron County is a county of the province of Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeast shore of its namesake, Lake Huron, in the southwest part of the province. The county seat is Goderich, also the county's largest community. The population reported in the 2021 Census for this predominantly agricultural area with many villages and small towns was 61,366 in a land area of 3,399 square kilometres. Morris-Turnberry
The Municipality of Morris-Turnberry is a municipality in Huron County, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the north portion of Huron County, near the Bruce County border, southeast of Wingham. It was formed as an amalgamation of the former Morris and Turnberry townships in 2001 in an Ontario-wide local government restructuring imposed by the government of that time. The two former townships now comprise the wards of the amalgamated municipality. Morris-Turnberry's only significant settlement is Bluevale, located at the junction of Huron Roads 86 and 87 east of Wingham. This is where Elias Disney, father of Walt Disney, was born in 1859. Maitland River
The Maitland River is a river in Huron County, Perth County and Wellington County in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Shows the course of the river highlighted on a topographic map. The river is in the Great Lakes Basin and empties into Lake Huron at the town of Goderich. It is long, and is named after Sir Peregrine Maitland, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1818 to 1828. It was formerly known as the Menesetung River. The Sons of Temperance was and is a brotherhood of men who promoted the temperance movement and mutual support. The group was founded in 1842 in New York City. It began spreading rapidly during the 1840s throughout the United States and parts of Canada. United States and Canada Membership The organization originally had a highly restricted membership. In order to become a member (called a “brother“), a man had to be nominated by an existing brother. Three other brothers would then investigate his life to determine if they thought he was worthy of membership. The Sons of Temperance required a two-dollar initiation fee, an amount equal to a week's wages of an ordinary worker. In addition, the weekly membership fee was six cents.
