This is a list of rivers which are at least partially located in Italy. They are organized according to the body of water they drain into, with the exceptions of Sicily and Sardinia, which are listed separately. At the bottom, all of the rivers are also listed alphabetically. Italian rivers are generally shorter than those of other European regions because Italy is partly a peninsula along which the Apennine chain rises, dividing the waters into two opposite sides. The longest Italian river is the Po, which flows for along the Po Valley. Rivers in Italy total about 1,200, and give rise, compared to other European countries, to a large number of marine mouths. Adige
The Adige (; german: Etsch ; vec, Àdexe ; rm, Adisch ; lld, Adesc; la, Athesis; grc, Ἄθεσις, Áthesis, or , ''Átagis'') is the second-longest river in Italy, after the Po. It rises near the Reschen Pass in the Vinschgau in the province of South Tyrol, near the Italian border with Austria and Switzerland, and flows through most of northeastern Italy to the Adriatic Sea. The river's name is Celtic in origin, from the Proto-Celtic cel-x-proto, *yt-ese, label=none, "the water", cognate with the River Tees in England (anciently ''Athesis'', ''Teesa''). Description The river source is near the Reschen Pass () close to the borders with Austria and Switzerland above the Inn valley. It flows through the artificial alpine Lake Reschen. Ortler
Ortler (; it, Ortles ) is, at above sea level, the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps outside the Bernina Range. It is the main peak of the Ortler Range. It is the highest point of the Southern Limestone Alps, of South Tyrol in Italy, of Tyrol overall, and, until 1919, of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. In German the mountain is commonly referred to as "König Ortler" (King Ortler), like in the unofficial hymn of South Tyrol, the '' Bozner Bergsteigerlied''. Geography The massive mountain is capped by a glacier on the northwest flank and has a long north ridge that ends at the village of ''Gomagoi'' and separates the valleys of Trafoi and Sulden. Prad am Stilfser Joch (; it, Prato allo Stelvio ), often abbreviated to Prad, is a ''comune'' (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located about west of the city of Bolzano, on the border with Switzerland, and near the Stelvio Pass.
