Su Teatro
Su Teatro is the third-oldest Chicano theater company in the United States and the oldest theater company of any kind in Denver, Colorado. Created in 1972 as a student theater group at the University of Colorado at Denver, it is now housed in the Denver Civic Theatre in the Santa Fe Arts District. Productions explore the Chicano experience in America with an emphasis on preserving cultural heritage and advocating for social justice. History Su Teatro was formed in a University of Colorado at Denver reading class in 1972 by faculty member Rowena Rivera. In protest against the university's policy of placing Chicano students in remedial reading courses, Rivera focused her teaching on drama, asking students to read plays while also creating and directing original work. Chicano
Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity for many Mexican Americans in the United States. The label ''Chicano'' is sometimes used interchangeably with ''Mexican American'', although the terms have different meanings. While Mexican-American identity was related to encouraging assimilation into White American society and separating the community from the African-American political struggle, Chicano identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth. Some belonged to the Pachuco subculture, and claimed the term (which had previously been a classist and racist slur). Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe (ADSF) is a nationally known arts and cultural district, encompassing hundreds of artists, galleries, studios, theaters, and creative businesses along Santa Fe Drive in Denver, Colorado. ADSF is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit membership organization. The organization formed in 2003 and became one of the first Certified Creative Districts in the state of Colorado in 2012. Auraria, Denver
Auraria was a small mining settlement in the Kansas Territory in the United States. Today it survives in its original location as a neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, south of the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. Geography Auraria is located in central Denver. Tony Garcia (playwright)
Anthony J. Garcia (born 1953), known as Tony Garcia, is a playwright and the current Executive Artistic Director of Su Teatro in Denver, Colorado. He has written over 20 original plays and has served as Su Teatro's artistic director since 1989. Biography Early life Garcia grew up in Denver, Colorado and has mentioned that his family lost their home as a result of the construction on Denver's Auraria Campus in the late 1960s. Education Garcia began attending the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall of 1973 and dropped out in the spring of 1974. He later graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater. Chicano Art
The Chicano Art Movement represents groundbreaking movements by Mexican-American artists to establish a unique artistic identity in the United States. Much of the art and the artists creating Chicano Art were heavily influenced by Chicano Movement (El Movimiento) which began in the 1960s. Chicano art was influenced by post-Mexican Revolution ideologies, pre-Columbian art, European painting techniques and Mexican-American social, political and cultural issues. The movement worked to resist and challenge dominant social norms and stereotypes for cultural autonomy and self-determination. Some issues the movement focused on were awareness of collective history and culture, restoration of land grants, and equal opportunity for social mobility.
