Tony Garcia (playwright)
Anthony J. Garcia (born 1953), known as Tony Garcia, is a playwright and the current Executive Artistic Director of Su Teatro in Denver, Colorado. He has written over 20 original plays and has served as Su Teatro's artistic director since 1989. Biography Early life Garcia grew up in Denver, Colorado and has mentioned that his family lost their home as a result of the construction on Denver's Auraria Campus in the late 1960s. Education Garcia began attending the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall of 1973 and dropped out in the spring of 1974. He later graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater. Garcia has since completed several fellowships, including the Rockefeller Fellowship in Theater arts in 2006, the United States Artists Fellowship in 2006, and the Livingston Fellowship from the Bonfils Stanton Foundation in 2011. Su Teatro
Su Teatro is the third-oldest Chicano theater company in the United States and the oldest theater company of any kind in Denver, Colorado. Created in 1972 as a student theater group at the University of Colorado at Denver, it is now housed in the Denver Civic Theatre in the Santa Fe Arts District. Auraria Campus is an educational facility located near downtown Denver, Colorado in the United States. The campus houses facilities of three separate universities and colleges: the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), Community College of Denver (CCD), and Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver). Ricardo Falcón
Ricardo Falcón (1945–1972) was a Chicano activist with the United Mexican American Students and was the first martyr of the Chicano movement in Colorado. Biography Falcón was born on June 2, 1945 in Fort Lupton, Colorado. He was the second of nine children, and his family were laborers in the sugar beet fields. He graduated from high school in May 1963, and attended Lamar Junior College (now Lamar Community College) where he graduated in 1965. Falcón earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Colorado Boulder. He worked at the university as the United Mexican American Students (UMAS) Educational Opportunity Program assistant director until May 1972, when he was suspended for threatening a student and "poor conduct." Lydia Mendoza
Lydia Mendoza (May 31, 1916December 20, 2007) was a Mexican-American guitarist and singer of Tejano and traditional Mexican-American music. Historian Michael Joseph Corcoran has stated that she was "The Mother of Tejano Music", an art form that is the uniquely Texas cultural amalgamation of traditional Mexican, Spanish, German, and Czech musical roots. She recorded on numerous labels over the course of her six-decade career of live performing. The aggregate total of her records numbers an estimated 200 different Spanish-language songs on at least 50 LP record albums. Daniel Valdez (born April 27, 1949) is an American actor, musician, composer, and activist. He is best known for his work as musical director of the films '' Zoot Suit'' (1981) and '' La Bamba'' (1987). Early life Daniel Valdez was born to Francisco and Armida Valdez. His brother is Luis Valdez. In 1966, Valdez joined Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers union. Career Valdez and his brother co-founded the theater group, Teatro Campesino.
