Carlos Páez Rodríguez
Carlos "Carlitos" Miguel Páez Rodríguez (born October 31, 1953), known as "the man of the iron spirit", spent 72 days in the Andes following a plane crash, during which the sixteen survivors of the 45 on board resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. He was 18 years old at the time of the crash, and turned 19 on the mountains. Biography He is the son of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed on October 13, 1972. Survival Film
The survival film is a film genre in which one or more characters make an effort at physical survival. It often overlaps with other film genres. It is a subgenre of the adventure film, along with swashbuckler films, war films, and safari films. Survival films are darker than most other adventure films and usually focus their storyline on a single character, usually the protagonist. The films tend to be "located primarily in a contemporary context", so film audiences are familiar with the setting, and the characters' activities are less romanticized. In a 1988 book, Thomas Sobchack compared the survival film to romance film: "They both emphasize the heroic triumph over obstacles which threaten social order and the reaffirmation of predominant social values such as fair play and respect for merit and cooperation." The Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was a chartered flight from Montevideo, Uruguay, bound for Santiago, Chile, that crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972. The accident and subsequent survival became known as the Andes flight disaster () and the Miracle of the Andes (). While crossing the Andes during poor weather, the inexperienced co-pilot Lagurara was at the controls of the Fairchild FH-227D. He mistakenly believed the aircraft had reached Curicó where the flight would turn to descend into Pudahuel Airport. He failed to notice that instrument readings indicated he was still from Curicó. He began descending and the aircraft struck a mountain, shearing off both wings and the tail section. Fernando "Nando" Seler Parrado Dolgay (born 9 December 1949) is one of the sixteen Uruguayan survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972. After spending two months trapped in the mountains with the other crash survivors, he, along with Roberto Canessa, climbed through the Andes mountains over a 10-day period to find help. His efforts, supported in various ways by the entire group, have been recognized through books and other media. He was portrayed by Ethan Hawke in the 1993 feature film ''Alive''. Javier Alfredo Methol Abal (11 December 1935 – 4 June 2015) was an Uruguayan businessman and lecturer, known for being one of the 16 survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. Biography First years He was born in Montevideo in 1935 to an upper-middle class family of Basque-French and Galician descent. After graduating from high school at the Elbio Fernández School, he started working at the Abal Hnos S.A. cigarette factory, which belonged to his mother's family. At the age of 20, he moved to Cuba and the United States to become a technician in the tobacco industry. While in the United States, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and had to remain hospitalized there for five months before returning to Uruguay. Roberto Fernando Jorge François Álvarez (born 23 November 1951), better known as Bobby François, is a former Uruguayan rugby player and agricultural producer, known for being one of the sixteen survivors of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash in the Andes Mountains in 1972. Like many other survivors, Bobby had studied at the Stella Maris school in the Carrasco neighborhood and was a member of the Old Christians rugby team. Roberto Jorge Canessa Urta, M.D., (born 17 January 1953) is one of the 16 survivors of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972, and a Uruguayan political figure.
