Steve Turre
Stephen Johnson Turre (born September 12, 1948, in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American jazz trombonist and a pioneer of using Conch (instrument), seashells as instruments, a composer, arranger, and educator at the collegiate-conservatory level. For years, Turre has been active in jazz, rock, and Latin jazz – in live venues, recording studios, television, and Filmmaking, cinema production. He has recorded over 20 albums as a bandleader, and appeared on many more as a contributor or sideman. As a studio musician, Turre is among the most prolific living jazz trombonists in the world. He has been a member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1985. Early life Turre is one of five children born to James Boles Turre (1921–1997) and Carmen Marie ''(née'' Johnson). Akua Dixon is an American composer, classical cellist, and lawyer . Early years Dixon was born and raised in New York City. Her early musical experience included singing in a Baptist church. She was educated at the High School of Performing Arts and the Manhattan School of Music, both in New York. Career An early high point in Dixon's career was playing a concert with Duke Ellington when she was about 25 years old. She went on to play at the Copacabana nightclub, at the Apollo Theater (performing with James Brown) and the Waldorf (performing with Diana Ross and Tony Bennett). Hannibal Lokumbe (born Marvin Peterson on November 11, 1948) is an American composer and jazz trumpeter. Career A native of Smithville, Texas, United States, he is sometimes known by the name "Hannibal". He attended high school in Texas City, Texas. In the late 1960s, he attended North Texas State University for two years, then moved to New York City and went on tour with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He became a member of the Gil Evans orchestra, an association that lasted through the 1980s, and worked with Roy Haynes and Pharoah Sanders. As the leader of the Sunrise Orchestra, he played koto and trumpet. His debut solo album, ''Children of the Fire'', was released in 1974. Lokumbe coauthored a biography of his life with the author, artist, and cultural anthropologist Lauren Coyle Rosen, called Hannibal Lokumbe: Spiritual Soundscapes of Music, Life, and Liberation' (Columbia University Press, 2024).
