Steve Irwin (other)
Stephen Robert Irwin (22 February 19624 September 2006), known as "The Crocodile Hunter", was an Australian zookeeper, conservationist, television personality, wildlife educator, and environmentalist. Irwin grew up around crocodiles and other types of reptiles and was educated regarding them by his father, Bob. He achieved international fame in the late 1990s from the television series ''The Crocodile Hunter'', an internationally broadcast wildlife documentary series that he co-hosted with his wife, Terri. The couple also hosted the series ''Croc Files'', ''The Crocodile Hunter Diaries'', and ''New Breed Vets''. They also co-owned and operated Australia Zoo, founded by Steve's parents in Beerwah, Queensland. They had two children, Bindi and Robert. In late 2006, Irwin died from an injury caused by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary in the Great Barrier Reef. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is a non-profit, marine conservation activism organization based in Friday Harbor, Washington, Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington, in the United States. ''Crikey steveirwini'' is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Camaenidae. ''Crikey steveirwini'' is the only species in the genus ''Crikey''. Etymology The specific name ''steveirwini'' is in memory of Australian wildlife expert Steve Irwin, who died from a stingray injury in 2006. The genus name was a favourite exclamation of Steve Irwin's, "crikey!" being an Australian minced oath. The MV ''Steve Irwin'' was the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and was used in their direct action campaigns against whaling and against illegal fisheries activities. The vessel was built in 1975 and formerly served as a Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency conservation enforcement patrol boat, the FPV ''Westra'', for 28 years. Sea Shepherd had originally christened the vessel the MY ''Robert Hunter'' after Canadian Robert Hunter, co-founder of Greenpeace, but it was renamed in honor of ''The Crocodile Hunter'' star Steve Irwin, who had died just over a year earlier, on December 5, 2007. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over over an area of approximately . It is the final documentary made by Irwin by the time of Death of Steve Irwin, his death, which occurred during filming. Beerwah () is a rural town and locality in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. At the the locality of Beerwah had a population of 7,734 people.
