Steinfurt
Steinfurt (; ) is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the capital of the district of Steinfurt. From –1806, it was the capital of the County of Steinfurt. Geography Steinfurt is situated north-west of Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia. Its name, roughly meaning “stony ford”, came into being in 1975 when the two hitherto independent towns Borghorst and Burgsteinfurt amalgamated. Borghorst became a prosperous city due to its flourishing textile industry, whereas Burgsteinfurt has always rather been characterized by culture and administration. Tourists of the 19th century passing Burgsteinfurt praised the city as the "Paradise of Westphalia" and "Royal Diamond" (''Königsdiamant'') because of its 75 monumental buildings and moated castle. County Of Steinfurt
The County of Steinfurt (), originally the Lordship of Steinfurt (), was a historic territory of the Holy Roman Empire in the Münsterland. It existed from roughly 1100 until 1806. History The Lordship of Steinfurt developed around Steinfurt Castle, first mentioned in 1129 but destroyed in feuds several times over the centuries. The name was originally ''Stenvorde'', referencing a stone ford on the nearby river Aa. In 1357, the lords of Steinfurt became immediate Imperial Counts when they acquired the County of Laer. Still, in 1396, they had to recognize the Prince-Bishop of Münster as the sovereign over Steinfurt. The House of Bentheim came into possession of the Lordship of Steinfurt through marriage in 1421. In 1454, the various Bentheim lands were separated, with Count Arnold I zu Bentheim-Steinfurt taking the Lordship of Steinfurt. Steinfurt (district)
Steinfurt () is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the northern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Bentheim, Emsland, district-free Osnabrück and the Osnabrück district, Warendorf, district-free Münster, Coesfeld, Borken. Geography The district is situated at the Lower Saxon border, north of Münster. The Ems river runs through the district from south to north. The highest point in the region is the Westerbecker Berg at 234 metres above sea level; the lowest point is Bentlage Castle at 32 metres. Horstmar is a German town, located in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Steinfurt (district), Steinfurt district, approx. north-west of Münster. Ochtrup
Ochtrup () is a town in the Steinfurt (district), district of Steinfurt, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated approximately 20 km west of Rheine and 20 km east of Enschede. History An early mention of the town was „Ohtepe“ (the eastern Epe, North Rhine-Westphalia, Epe or Ostepe) in the year 1143. A Christian church was established there in 1203. Between November 25 and November 30, 2005, the town was often off the German power grid, and was the topic of national news. The cause was a heavy snow storm with very wet snow. The power poles and cables between Gronau, North Rhine-Westphalia, Gronau and Ochtrup were encrusted with a thick layer of ice.
