Staveley F.C. was a football club in Staveley, a village in Derbyshire, England. History The club was founded in 1875 and originally played under the Sheffield rules. The first known matches for the club were in 1876. Key players for the club from its earliest days were the Hay brothers; George as goalkeeper, William as back-up goalkeeper, Sammy as half-back, and Jack as forward, plus later Tom Hay. Staveley was nicknamed 'Old Foot and Mouth' by opponents due to the highly competitive and hard tackling nature of their players (who would "get a foot in") and the vociferously partisan nature of their supporters. The club's first success was in the Sheffield Senior Cup in 1879-80, beating Heeley F.C. in the final 3-1; the result was considered a shock, with Heeley being 1/4 favourites. 1885–86 FA Cup
The 1885–86 Football Association Challenge Cup was the 15th edition of the FA Cup, England's oldest football tournament. There were 130 entrants, sixteen more than in the previous season, although six teams did not play a match. Five Scottish clubs entered but one was eliminated in the first round in an all-Scottish tie and travel constraints caused the rest to withdraw. Blackburn Rovers became the second team to win the competition in three successive seasons and, as of 2022, they remain the last to do so. Dan Doyle (footballer)
Daniel Doyle (16 September 1864 – 9 April 1918) was a Scottish footballer who played for among others, East Stirlingshire, Hibernian, Sunderland Albion, Grimsby Town (where a collision with opponent William Cropper in an 1889 match led to the other player's death - an inquest cleared Doyle of any wrongdoing), Bolton Wanderers, Everton (where he partnered Andrew Hannah in defence as the club won their first Football League title in 1890–91), Celtic (where he won four Scottish Football League championships – becoming the first player to win a league title on both sides of the border), and the Scotland national team. He won a total of eight caps for Scotland between 1892 and 1898, and also represented the Scottish League XI ten times. He died from cancer at his home in Glasgow in April 1918. William Cropper
William Cropper (27 December 1862 – 13 January 1889) was an English cricketer and footballer who played cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1882 and 1888 and football, as a centre forward, once for Derby County. He was one of nineteen sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County, but died aged 26 as a result of an accident while playing football for Staveley. Cropper was born at Brimington, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Cropper, and was a bricklayer. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1882 season. He also played for the North of England team. He shared most wickets for the club in the 1883, 1884, 1885 and 1886 seasons. In 1886, he played one football match for Derby County.
