State Public School At Coldwater
Michigan's State Public School at Coldwater was a model institution at Coldwater, Michigan, for the education and support of dependent and ill-treated children of the state. It was established by an act of the state legislature in 1871, but was not formally opened until 1874. The object of the institution was to receive, care for, educate, and place whenever possible in family homes all the dependent children of Michigan of sound mind and body between the ages of two and twelve. The board of control, however, had the discretionary power vested in it of admitting children under two where circumstances warranted such an exception. In 1902 there were 155 inmates in the school. The school was located on a farm of 160 acres, covered partly by orchards, ornamental trees, and gardens. The buildings consisted of an administration building, schoolhouse proper, and nine cottages among which the inmates are distributed. Coldwater is a city in Branch County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 10,945. It is the county seat of Branch County, located in the center of the southern border of Michigan. The city is surrounded by Coldwater Township, but is administratively autonomous. History American settlers did not move into the area until around 1830, with many arriving from New York and New England. Coldwater was incorporated as a village in 1837, and then incorporated by the legislature as a city in 1861. It was designated in 1842 as the county seat of Branch County. Geography The Coldwater River flows into the city from the south, originating from Coldwater Lake. The Coldwater chain of lakes also has an outlet called the Sauk River, which flows from its north end (near Quincy) and then through the south side of the city of Coldwater. Minnesota State Public School For Dependent And Neglected Children
The Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children was a residential and educational facility for wards of the state from 1886 to 1945, located in Owatonna, Minnesota, United States. The State School was created by an act of the Minnesota legislature in 1885 as an effort to provide safe, transitional housing for the state's orphaned, abandoned, and abused children. The goal was to remove at-risk children from harmful situations and place them in the State School, where they would reside in a home-like setting, receive an education, and eventually be placed with suitable farm families. Over 60 years of operation, the State School was home to a total of 10,635 children. The facility closed in 1945 as adoption and foster care came to be preferred over institutionalization. Florence Crane Correctional Facility
Florence Crane Correctional Facility (ACF) was a Michigan prison, located in Coldwater, for adult male prisoners. History The prison was opened in April 1985, after the facility was taken over from the Coldwater Regional Center for Developmental Disabilities and renovated. A new housing unit and food service building were opened in March 2000. The prison was closed on June 1, 2011, and in 2019 several buildings were torn down. Facility The prison had housing units used for Michigan Department of Corrections male prisoners 18 years of age and older. The facility also included a food service building. It was adjacent to the Lakeland Correctional Facility. Security The facility is surrounded by double fences with razor-ribbon wire.
