Stanislaw Victor De Tarczynski
Stanislaw Victor de Tarczyński (1882–1952) was a Polish-Australian violinist and music teacher. Life and career Born in Warsaw, Stanislaw Victor de Tarczynski was educated at the Warsaw Conservatorium, where his father was professor. Following this, he spent one year as violinist with the Moscow Grand Opera before returning to Poland. He was a student of Grażyna Bacewicz, before he continued his studies at the Berlin Hochschule under Henry Marteau, and led the Ysaÿe Symphony Orchestra in Brussels. He arrived in Australia in 1912, initially as a tourist, but was forced to change his status to immigrant, after the outbreak of war in Europe meant he was unable to return home. He initially played violin in theatres in Melbourne, and later taught at the University of Melbourne's Conservatorium of Music and the Albert Street Conservatorium. Colin Colahan
Colin Cuthbert Orr Colahan (12 February 1897 – 6 June 1987) was an Australian painter and sculptor who was educated at Xavier College. Colahan was born in Woodend, Victoria in 1897, the second youngest of the six children of Surgeon-Major-General John Joseph Aloysius Colahan (1836–1918), and Eliza McDowell Colahan (1859–1899), née Orr. While a student in Melbourne he joined Max Meldrum's school of painting and subsequently became a key figure of the Australian tonalist movement. In 1937 he joined and exhibited with Robert Menzies' Australian Academy of Art. Colahan created the 'Sirena' fountain for the Italian town of Bordighera. His sculpture of the head of Victor Smorgon was bought by the National Gallery of Victoria. His work can be found in the collections of the state galleries of Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Halinka Tarczynska-Fiddian (1923-2019) was an Australian soprano opera singer and educator. Life and career Halinka de Tarczynska was the only daughter of Polish-Australian violinist Stanislaw Victor de Tarczynski and Jadwiga (née Kilbach). Born in Melbourne, she was taught piano by her mother from age four, and at eleven was performing with the Victorian Symphony Orchestra and sining in Italian, French and German for the ABC. She also spoke and sang in Polish and English. She studied with Edward Goll, and Ignaz Friedman, and sang with the National Opera, J. C. Williamson productions, as well as made recordings for Columbia. She was also an amateur film-maker and actor, and in 1945 won an award for her short comedy film ''Miss Understanding''. The Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music was a school of music located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. During its early days it was closely associated with opera diva Dame Nellie Melba, after whom it was later named. In 1994 it became affiliated with Victoria University.
