World Bowls Championship
The World Bowls Championship is the premier world bowls competition between national bowls organisations. The premier indoor event is the World Indoor Bowls Championships listed separately and is organised by the World Bowls Tour. World Outdoor Championships First held in Australia in 1966, the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women are held every four years. From 2008 the men's and women's events were held together. Qualifying national bowls organisations (usually countries) are represented by a team of five players, who play once as a single and a four, then again as a pair and a triple. The 1984 Men's World Outdoor Bowls Championship was held at Westburn Park in Aberdeen, Scotland, from 11 to 28 July 1984. Peter Belliss won the singles defeating Willie Wood in the final. Sammy Allen
Samuel Barnett Allen is a Northern Irish lawn and indoor bowler and was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland on 6 July 1938. Bowls career Allen has been bowling since 1966 and has skipped a combined Ireland both indoors and outdoors. He won a Fours bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland. Allen also won a gold medal for the Triples in the 1984 World Outdoor Championships in Aberdeen and a Fours gold at the 1988 World Outdoor Championships in Auckland. Further success came when he won the 1996 World Outdoor Championships Pairs Gold in Adelaide with Jeremy Henry. Jim Baker is a former Northern Irish international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Baker was born in Belfast on 18 February 1958. After finishing runner-up in the 1982 World Indoor Bowls Championship he went one better in 1984 clinching the World Indoor title. Baker was part of the Gold Medal-winning triples for the combined Irish team in the 1984 World Outdoor Bowls Championship and Gold Medal-winning fours in the 1988 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. In the 2004 World Championships he won a third gold medal for the combined Irish team, in the fours with Jonathan Ross, Noel Graham and Neil Booth and a silver medal with Noel Graham in the pairs during the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship. The 1978 Commonwealth Games were held in Edmonton, Alberta from 3 to 12 August 1978, two years after the 1976 Summer Olympics were held in Montreal, Quebec.
