Spinifex State College Junior Campus is a heritage-listed state high school at 6-12 Fifth Avenue, Parkside, Mount Isa, City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Department of Public Works (Queensland) and built in 1954. It is also known as Mount Isa State High School and Mount Isa Intermediate School. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 August 2018. History Spinifex Junior College was founded in 1953 as Mount Isa State High School serving the mining town of Mount Isa. It is located on the west side of the Leichhardt River, about 0.75 km south of the main mine site and 1 km southwest of the Mount Isa central business district. The site includes five Hawksley prefabricated school buildings (1954-1960), a connecting link (1955-1957), and a head teacher's residence (1956). Parkside is a suburb of Mount Isa in the City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. In the , Parkside had a population of 1,532 people. Geography The Leichhardt River flows north-south through the town of Mount Isa, dividing the suburbs of the town into "mineside" (west of the Leichhardt River) and "townside" (east of the Leichhardt River). Parkside is a "mineside" suburb. History St Joseph's Catholic Primary School was established by the Sisters of St Joseph in Railway Avenue in 1923 and operated there until 1984. In 1964, the Sisters established a secondary school for girls called San Jose Catholic Secondary School (also known as San Jose College) on Twenty-Third Avenue. Tent House, Mount Isa
Tent House is a heritage-listed house at Fourth Street, Parkside, City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. It was built . It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The population growth of Mount Isa was rapid from 1926 to 1930, and this caused acute housing shortages. In 1929, there were hundreds of tents, housing railway and construction workers, sprawled between the town and the mine. Other huts had walls made from beaten-out chemical drums from the mill, antbed floors and corrugated iron roofs. But a new town on the other side of the hill absorbed many. The settlement of Mount Isa Mines was built by the company on its leases for its own men, a planned and self-contained town which was approached through a valley guarded by a gatekeeper. Queensland Housing Commission
The Queensland Housing Commission was a Queensland Government agency which was established in 1945 under the ''State Housing Act 1945''. The agency aimed to improve the lives of individuals and families by providing access to secure, affordable and appropriate housing. One of the earliest and biggest projects undertaken by the Commission was a detached housing estate in Inala. In the Brisbane suburb of Stafford a significant number of post-war Queensland Housing Commission homes were built on quarter-acre blocks in the 1940s and 1950s. After the Second World War, the Imported Homes Scheme was initiated and funded by the Federal government. Norm Smith (Australian Politician)
Alfred James "Norm" Smith (23 March 1901 – 9 July 1983) was a businessman, and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Smith was born in Brisbane, Queensland, to parents Harry Smith, a navvy in the railways, and his wife Emma (née Elms). Due to his father's job, his family moved many times and he was educated at 15 different schools and the longest he stayed at any one school was 12 months. After he left school he began working as an assistant tapper at the Kuridala Copper Smelter but the smelter closed in 1918. He then was a mail carrier with his father in Selwyn- Boulia, and in 1923 he moved to Mt Isa where he worked as a truck driver for Mount Isa Mines. By 1932 he was a research chemist's assistant and in 1934 he acquired his father's business, a hotel, the Star Theatre, and an ice works. Asarco LLC (American Smelting and Refining Company) is a mining, smelting, and refining company based in Tucson, Arizona, which mines and processes primarily copper.
