Norm Smith (Australian Politician)
Alfred James "Norm" Smith (23 March 1901 – 9 July 1983) was a businessman, and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Smith was born in Brisbane, Queensland, to parents Harry Smith, a navvy in the railways, and his wife Emma (née Elms). Due to his father's job, his family moved many times and he was educated at 15 different schools and the longest he stayed at any one school was 12 months. After he left school he began working as an assistant tapper at the Kuridala Copper Smelter but the smelter closed in 1918. He then was a mail carrier with his father in Selwyn- Boulia, and in 1923 he moved to Mt Isa where he worked as a truck driver for Mount Isa Mines. By 1932 he was a research chemist's assistant and in 1934 he acquired his father's business, a hotel, the Star Theatre, and an ice works. Electoral District Of Carpentaria
Carpentaria was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Carpentaria was created by the Electoral Districts Act of 1887, taking effect at the 1888 elections. It was based in far northern Queensland. Carpentaria was abolished at the 1912 elections, split into Electoral district of Burke and Electoral district of Cook. Carpentaria was recreated at the 1932 elections, replacing Flinders. The Australian Workers' Union (AWU) is one of Australia's largest and oldest trade unions. It traces its origins to unions founded in the pastoral and mining industries in the 1880s and currently has approximately 80,000 members. It has exercised an outsized influence on the Australian trade union movement and on the Australian Labor Party throughout its history. The Queensland Government is the democratic administrative authority of the Australian state of Queensland. The Government of Queensland, a parliamentary constitutional monarchy was formed in 1859 as prescribed in its Constitution, as amended from time to time. Alec Inch
Alexander James Inch (23 October 1915 – 3 July 1994) was an Engine driver and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Inch was born at Charters Towers, Queensland, to Alexander William and his wife Elizabeth Genevieve (née Lacey) and was educated at St Columbus Primary School and Mount Carmel Christian Brothers in Charters Towers. During the depression, Inch worked in the pastoral industry and also doing railway maintenance. By the early 1940s, he had become a 1st class engine driver in Innisfail and in the 1950s he was a 1st class electrical and general winding-engine driver working for Mount Isa Mines. Political career At the 1960 election the seat of Burke was reincarnated and Inch, standing for the Labor Party, won the seat. He held the seat until 1972 when it was once again abolished and Inch moved to the new seat of Mount Isa but did not contest the seat in 1974. Electoral District Of Burke
Burke was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1932, and again from 1960 to 1972. It covered remote rural areas in Northwest Queensland. It originally existed as a single-member district until 1888, when it was changed to a dual-member district. This was changed at the next election when it was split into two single electorates - Burke and Croydon. Burke was amalgamated into the district of Carpentaria from the 1932 election, but was revived for the 1960 election, until it was finally abolished at the 1972 election and renamed Mount Isa. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them.
