Spillers
Spillers Ltd was a British company that owned flour milling operations, operated bakeries and also sold pet food and equine feeds. History The business originated in 1829 from the establishment of a flour mill in Bridgwater, Somerset, by Joel Spiller. The business rapidly expanded to other parts of England and Wales. In 1855 Spillers began to manufacture ships' biscuits. By 1854, Spiller opened a flour mill in Cardiff with his business partner Samuel Browne. The mill burned down in 1882 and was rebuilt in 1887 incorporating two other mills. In 1893 a mill was built in Cardiff that formed part of a complex of steam-powered roller mills with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year. In 1889 the business merged with William Baker and Sons of Bristol to form Spillers and Bakers Ltd. At the beginning of the 20th century Spillers introduced the Turog brand of brown bread. Dalgety plc—as Dalgety and Company—was for more than a century a major pastoral and agricultural company or stock and station agency in Australia and New Zealand. Controlled from London it was listed on the London Stock Exchange and Australasian exchanges. With the mid-20th century decline of the pastoral sector, particularly where Dalgety held the leading position in the synthetics bedevilled slumping wool trade, new investment was made in different sectors in other countries and Australasian investments sold down until it became a foods and agricultural business of the northern hemisphere. Kennomeat
Kennomeat was a popular brand of canned dog food sold in the United Kingdom. Robert Wilson & Sons were an established manufacturer of pet foods, with canneries in Barrhead near Glasgow and at Malone in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and in the 1930s they registered the names ''Kennomeat'' and ''Kattomeat''. These products for dogs and for cats were not launched until the 1950s, but soon took 20 per cent of the British pet food market. Kennomeat was particularly popular in the 1960s due to a successful series of TV commercials which reversed the role of dogs and their masters. In 1964, Spillers Ltd took over the brand names with its acquisition of Wilsons' subsidiary, Scottish Animal Products Ltd. Winalot
Winalot is a popular brand of dog food sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The name was first used in 1927 for dog biscuits by Spillers Ltd; they were initially marketed as a food for racing greyhounds, but soon gained popularity with domestic canines and became a brand leader in the 1930s. The Spillers business was acquired in 1998 by Nestlé, after which point the Winalot brand was expanded to include a wide range of dry and tinned dog foods and snacks. New Malden is an area in South West London, England. It is located mainly within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and the London Borough of Merton, and is from Charing Cross. United Kingdom BSE Outbreak
The United Kingdom was afflicted with an outbreak of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as "mad cow disease"), and its human equivalent variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (vCJD), in the 1980s and 1990s. Over four million head of cattle were slaughtered in an effort to contain the outbreak, and 178 people died after contracting vCJD through eating infected beef. A political and public health crisis resulted, and British beef was banned from export to numerous countries around the world, with some bans remaining in place until as late as 2019. The outbreak is believed to have originated in the practice of supplementing protein in cattle feed by meat-and-bone meal (MBM), which used the remains of other animals.
