Speech (album)
''Speech'' is the fourth and final album of the British band Steamhammer. In 1971, bassist Steve Davy left the band, and Louis Cennamo was recruited as his replacement - then, vocalist/guitarist Kieran White also left after a summer tour. Guitarist Martin Pugh, drummer Mick Bradley and Cennamo (with guest vocalist Garth Watt-Roy, of Fuzzy Duck) then went in the studio to record ''Speech'', which was released in 1972. It consisted of three lengthy (and mostly instrumental) songs in a heavier progressive-rock vein, that was somewhat different from their initial blues and folk/jazz-influenced albums. Bradley died from leukemia shortly before the album's mixing was completed (the album is dedicated to him on the inside album cover). The band continued with American singer/guitarist Bruce Payne and drummer John Lingwood, touring in Germany in support of the album, where they were more popular than back home in England. Fuzzy Duck (band)
Fuzzy Duck were an English progressive rock/ hard rock group from London, formed in 1970. Career The group's self-titled studio album ''Fuzzy Duck'' was released in 1971 on the MAM label. It featured bassist/vocalist Mick Hawksworth of Five Day Week Straw People, Killing Floor and Andromeda, as well as Crazy World of Arthur Brown keyboardist Roy Sharland and drummer Paul Francis of Tucky Buzzard (and later of Tranquility). The group disbanded soon after the release of their album, but enduring interest in the band led to reissues on CD by Akarma, Esoteric and Repertoire Records. Additionally, in 1971 vocalist Garth Watt-Roy (the elder brother of bass player Norman Watt-Roy) was asked by the band Steamhammer to provide vocals for the final album, ''Speech'' (released in 1972 and produced by former Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf). Paul Whitehead is a British painter and graphic artist known for his surrealistic album covers for artists on the Charisma Records label in the 1970s, such as Genesis and Van der Graaf Generator. __TOC__ Life and work England: Liberty Records and Charisma Records An art show in London in the mid-sixties led to Whitehead being picked up as an in-house artist for the London office of Jazz record label Liberty Records. Armageddon were an English hard rock band formed in 1974. Their self-titled debut, ''Armageddon'', was recorded in England and released in the United States on A&M Records. The albums' original liner notes use the term "supergroup", as their personnel were drummer Bobby Caldwell (previously a member of Captain Beyond), singer Keith Relf (who had fronted the band the Yardbirds and was a co-founder of Renaissance), guitarist Martin Pugh (from Steamhammer), and bassist Louis Cennamo (also formerly of Renaissance and Steamhammer). Johnny Winter
John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 – July 16, 2014) was an American singer and guitarist. Winter was known for his high-energy blues rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and 1970s. He also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of the " 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Early life Johnny Winter was born in Beaumont, Texas, on February 23, 1944. He and younger brother Edgar (born 1946) were nurtured at an early age by their parents in musical pursuits. Bobby Caldwell (drummer)
Bobby Caldwell is an American drummer, songwriter, producer and arranger who co-founded the rock bands Captain Beyond (with Rod Evans) and Armageddon (with Keith Relf) during the early 1970s. Prior to these projects he played on seminal Johnny Winter albums such as ''Live Johnny Winter And'' and '' Saints and Sinners''. Caldwell was also the drummer on Rick Derringer's '' All American Boy,'' which produced the classic-rock radio staple "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo", a song originally written by Derringer and recorded by the band, Johnny Winter And, with Derringer's brother, Randy Z on drums. He also played with John Lennon, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton. Caldwell and Rick Derringer recorded "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" at Caribou Ranch in Colorado. In the 1960s, he was member of the New Englanders and Noah's Ark. He is still active and living in Florida. In 1998, a reformed, new lineup of Captain Beyond created some new demo songs. Leukemia
Leukemia ( also spelled leukaemia and pronounced ) is a group of blood cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal blood cells. These blood cells are not fully developed and are called ''blasts'' or ''leukemia cells''. Symptoms may include bleeding and bruising, bone pain, fatigue, fever, and an increased risk of infections. Mick Bradley
Mick Bradley (1947 – 8 February 1972) was a British drummer and vocalist, known for being a member of the blues-rock band Steamhammer. He played on three Steamhammer albums. In 1969, Bradley played drums on the ''Methuselah'' album by the late 1960s band Methuselah. He then joined Steamhammer, taking over from Michael Rushton, and played drums on the '' Mk II'' (1969), ''Mountains'' (1970), and ''Speech'' (1972) albums. He also played percussion and conga. Bradley died on 8 February 1972, aged 25. He died from undiagnosed leukemia shortly before the mixing of the ''Speech'' album was completed. The album is dedicated to him on the inside album cover and the band dissolved the following year, making ''Speech'' the final Steamhammer album. Steamhammer is an English rock band from Worthing, England, that was formed in 1968 by vocalist Kieran White, guitarists Martin Quittenton and Martin Pugh, bassist Steve Davy, and drummer Michael Rushton. Career Steamhammer's first line-up acted as backing band for Freddie King on two of his tours of England in 1968–1969. Like many of their peers, the band experimented with instrumental passages, introspective lyrics, and ultrasonic guitar effects, along with folk, jazz and classical influences. After playing in English pubs in the late 1960s, Steamhammer's self-titled album '' Steamhammer'' (aka ''Reflection'') debuted on Columbia Records in 1968, featuring their single, "Junior's Wailing", and including covers of "You'll Never Know" by B.
