Steamhammer (band)
Steamhammer is an English rock band from Worthing, England, that was formed in 1968 by vocalist Kieran White, guitarists Martin Quittenton and Martin Pugh, bassist Steve Davy, and drummer Michael Rushton. Career Steamhammer's first line-up acted as backing band for Freddie King on two of his tours of England in 1968–1969. Like many of their peers, the band experimented with instrumental passages, introspective lyrics, and ultrasonic guitar effects, along with folk, jazz and classical influences. After playing in English pubs in the late 1960s, Steamhammer's self-titled album '' Steamhammer'' (aka ''Reflection'') debuted on Columbia Records in 1968, featuring their single, "Junior's Wailing", and including covers of "You'll Never Know" by B. B. King and "Twenty Four Hours" by Eddie Boyd as well as original songs by White, Quittenton, and Pugh. Guest session musicians Harold McNair (flute) and Pete Sears (piano) also played on the album. Mick Bradley
Mick Bradley (1947 – 8 February 1972) was a British drummer and vocalist, known for being a member of the blues-rock band Steamhammer. He played on three Steamhammer albums. In 1969, Bradley played drums on the ''Methuselah'' album by the late 1960s band Methuselah. He then joined Steamhammer, taking over from Michael Rushton, and played drums on the '' Mk II'' (1969), ''Mountains'' (1970), and ''Speech'' (1972) albums. He also played percussion and conga. Bradley died on 8 February 1972, aged 25. He died from undiagnosed leukemia shortly before the mixing of the ''Speech'' album was completed. The album is dedicated to him on the inside album cover and the band dissolved the following year, making ''Speech'' the final Steamhammer album. ''Mk II'' was the second album of the British rock band Steamhammer. Background For this LP, drummer Michael Ruston was replaced by Mick Bradley (who stayed with the band through to their final LP in 1972, ''Speech''). Harold McNair
Harold McNair (5 November 1931 – 7 March 1971) was a Jamaican-born saxophonist and flautist. Early life McNair was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He attended the Alpha Boys School under the tutelage of Vincent Tulloch, while playing with Joe Harriott (a lifelong friend who considered McNair his ''de facto'' younger brother), Wilton "Bogey" Gaynair, and Baba Motta's band. He spent the first decade of his musical career in The Bahamas, where he used the name "Little G" for recordings and live performances. His early Bahamian recordings were mostly in Caribbean musical styles rather than jazz, in which he sang and played both alto and tenor saxophone. He also played a calypso singer in the film '' Island Women'' (1958). In 1960, he recorded his first album, a mixture of jazz and calypso numbers entitled ''Bahama Bash''. Freddie King
Freddie King (September 3, 1934December 28, 1976) was an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is considered one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with Albert King and B.B. King, none of whom were blood related). Mostly known for his soulful and powerful voice and distinctive guitar playing, King had a major influence on electric blues music and on many later blues guitarists. Born in Gilmer, Texas, King became acquainted with the guitar at the age of six. He started learning the guitar from his mother and his uncle. King moved to Chicago when he was a teenager; there he formed his first band the Every Hour Blues Boys with guitarist Jimmie Lee Robinson and drummer Frank "Sonny" Scott.
