Specialist Subject Records
Specialist Subject Records is an English independent record label initially founded in Leeds in 2007, but based largely in Exeter since being revived in 2009. They have been described as a "powerhouse" of DIY Indie Rock. History Specialist Subject started in 2007 to release one 7" by the band Magnus Magnusson. In 2009 the label was revived in Exeter as a method of self releasing Horne's band Bangers, as well as those by friends' bands such as Caves. For some time Specialist Subject had an office in the centre of the city. Since opening a record shop in Bristol in August 2017 the label has been run from its premises upstairs at the music venue Exchange in the Old Market area of Bristol. The label has mostly seen releases by up-and-coming British bands such as Doe, Muncie Girls, and Fresh; but it has also put out the UK editions of albums by acts from other anglophone countries such as The Smith Street Band (Australia), Jeff Rosenstock (USA), and Pillow Queens (Ireland). Fresh (band)
Fresh is a British pop punk band formed in London in 2015 by Kathryn Woods (vocals/guitar), with George Phillips (bass) and Daniel Goldberg (drums) joining in 2016. The current lineup is completed by Myles McCabe (guitar), who joined in 2017. They have released two full-length albums and three EPs. History Fresh was started in London in 2015 by songwriter Kathryn Woods (vocals/guitar). George Phillips (bass) and Daniel Goldberg (drums) joined the live band in 2016, and would go on to play on its debut album. Witching Waves (band)
Witching Waves are a DIY indie post-punk band from London, England. Drowned in Sound hailed their debut long-player as one of the best albums of 2014. They have released three full-length albums on independent record labels. History Witching Waves (Emma Wigham: drums; Mark Jasper: guitars) formed in late 2013 following the dissolution of Wigham's previous band Weird Menace, which Jasper had also joined in its final incarnation. The new band released a debut self-titled EP on the Suplex Cassettes label the same year and a cassette single on Soft Power Records in early 2014. Witching Waves’ first album ''Fear of Falling Down'' was released in 2014 to positive reviews. Supermilk
Supermilk is an indie rock band from London, England. Originally the solo recording project of former Doe drummer/vocalist Jake Popyura, Supermilk has been releasing music since 2017 with a full band incarnation active since 2020. History Supermilk released its first EP ''Hello? Yes this is Supermilk...'' in 2017 via Keroleen Records. A second EP, ''Rare Delusions'', followed in 2019. After the dissolution of Popyura's long term band Doe, Supermilk announced the release of its debut album along with a live band featuring members of Personal Best, Colour Me Wednesday and Cheerbleederz. Several shows were scheduled but later cancelled due to the global coronavirus pandemic. The album, ''Death Is the Best Thing for You Now'', was released on March 27th 2020. Slingshot Dakota
Slingshot Dakota is an American rock band from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. History Slingshot Dakota formed in Long Island in 2003 as a three-piece, issuing their debut, ''Keener Sighs'', in 2004. At the time, the group was composed of Carly Comando, Pat Schramm (of the band Latterman) and Jeff Cunningham. In the spring of 2005, Schramm was replaced by Patterson. In the fall of 2006, Cunningham left the band, and the band remained a two-piece. In November 2007, the band released its sophomore effort, ''Their Dreams Are Dead, but Ours Is the Golden Ghost!''. Personal Best (band)
Personal Best are an English punk band from Bristol. Founded by songwriter Robin Gatt in 2013, they have had several lineup changes in the time since. They have currently released two full-length albums; ''Arnos Vale'' (2015) and ''What You At'' (2019). History Personal Best was founded by Robin Gatt as a vehicle for her songwriting in Bristol in 2013. The original lineup included Tom Hussey (also of the band Attack! Vipers!) on bass and Lou Hanman (also of the band Caves) on drums. This trio recorded the debut EP released on Specialist Subject Records in 2014. On 30 March 2015, they released their debut album ''Arnos Vale'', recorded with producer and engineer Gethin Pearson in mid-Wales. Martha (band)
Martha are a rock band from Pity Me, a village in County Durham in the North East of England. After singles on their own Discount Horse label and Odd Box Records, their debut album ''Courting Strong'', was released on Fortuna Pop! and Salinas Records in 2014. As of 2022 they have released four full-length albums on cult UK and US based independent record labels. They have described themselves as queer, straight edge, vegan and anarchist. Hovvdy
Hovvdy is an American Indie pop duo from Austin, Texas. History The duo began their career releasing an EP in 2014. The following year, they released a split with the band Loafer. Hovvdy released their debut album, ''Taster'', in 2016. In 2018, Hovvdy released their second full-length album titled ''Cranberry''. In 2019, the duo released a split with musician Hannah Read, known as Lomelda. The split found Hovvdy and Lomelda covering each others songs. The two also went on a summer tour to promote the split. Great Cynics
Great Cynics were a punk rock group based in London, England. History Formation and debut album Great Cynics initially started out as a solo project for Brighton based singer-songwriter Giles Bidder under the name Cynics. After relocating to London in 2010 and supporting Against Me! and Paint It Black across several UK dates, Bidder decided that his songs would work better with a full band behind him and teamed up with drummer Bob Barrett. Bidder and Barrett then headed into the studio to record what would become '' Don't Need Much'' with producer Peter Miles handling bass duties. Iona Cairns joined the band just before their first tour. Shortly before the album's release, the band were forced to rename themselves after American garage rock revival band The Cynics threatened legal action, and they subsequently became Great Cynics. AJJ is an American folk punk band from Phoenix, Arizona, originally formed in 2004 as Andrew Jackson Jihad. Their lyrics handle themes of shyness, poverty, humanity, religion, addiction, existentialism, and politics. Singer/guitarist Sean Bonnette and bassist Ben Gallaty are the only remaining founding members. Pillow Queens
Pillow Queens are an Irish indie rock band from Dublin, formed in 2016. The band is composed of co-lead vocalists Sarah Corcoran and Pamela Connolly, lead guitarist Cathy McGuiness and drummer Rachel Lyons. The instrumental roles of Corcoran and Connolly switch around depending on which of them is performing lead vocals – if a song features Corcoran on lead vocals, for example, then she will play rhythm guitar and Connolly will play bass, and vice versa for Connolly's songs. The band have been praised for their lyrical content, which often reckons with an Irish Catholic upbringing mixed with the band members themselves being openly LGBT.
