Space Empires 4X
Space Empires 4X is a 4X science fiction board wargame developed by Jim Krohn and published by GMT Games in 2011. It has received two expansions: Close Encounters (2012) and Replicators (2018), with a third one, All Good Things, in development. Gameplay In Space Empires 4X, up to 4 players engage in space exploration, colonization and combat, while developing technologies to design new ships or improve their existing ones. The game is played on a hexagonal map of space, and ships are represented by cardboard chits. The size of the map, victory conditions, and starting resources depend on the number of players and on the scenario players choose at game start. In addition to seven scenarios for two players and scenarios for bigger groups, there are four single-player scenarios with two distinct opponent factions. ''Space Empires IV'' is a turn-based 4X strategy computer game developed by Malfador Machinations and published by Strategy First as part of the ''Space Empires'' series in which players control an alien race in an attempt at galactic conquest. Gameplay The gameplay is similar to ''Civilization'' style games in the sense that one controls the overall organization of the alien race on a scale far above that of controlling individual persons. Combat is not necessitated by the game itself and players are free to engage in political negotiations with their rivals. The mechanics of the game allow players to either improve their planets' resource production through the construction of facilities or build more ships with which to defend their empires. 4X (abbreviation of ''Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate'') is a subgenre of strategy-based computer and board games, and include both turn-based and real-time strategy titles. The gameplay involves building an empire. Emphasis is placed upon economic and technological development, as well as a range of military and non-military routes to supremacy. The earliest 4X games borrowed ideas from board games and 1970s text-based computer games. The first 4X computer games were turn-based, but real-time 4X games are common.
