Southgate HC
Southgate Hockey Club is a field hockey club based at Southgate Hockey Centre in Trent Park, near Oakwood in London. The men's 1st XI play in the Men's England Hockey League. The club has 9 men's sides, 5 ladies' sides and a large junior section. History The club was formed in 1886. Matches were initially played in Broomfield Park, Palmers Green; in 1890 the club relocated to the Walker Ground on Waterfall Road. In order to meet the challenge created by the introduction of artificial grass pitches, the club began hiring pitches away from the Walker Ground from around 1985. After a search for a new location, the club relocated to Southgate Hockey Centre during the 1997/98 season. For most of its history the club has provided many players for the national side and, prior to the formation of organised leagues in 1968, featuring prominently in the unofficial leagues published in the press. 1988–89 England Hockey League Season
The 1988–89 English Hockey League season took place from October 1988 until April 1989. A new league format was introduced to English hockey whereby two divisions of sixteen teams would compete in the first and second divisions with promotion and relegation. This replaced the previous format of regional leagues. The Men's National League attracted a sponsor in Poundstretcher and they would commit £300,000 over three years. The inaugural competition was won by Southgate and the top four teams qualified to take part in the Poundstretcher League Cup tournament which was won by Hounslow. Richard Dodds
Richard David Allan Dodds OBE (born 23 February 1959) is an English former field hockey player. He was captain of the gold medal-winning Great Britain squad in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Four years earlier, he won Bronze at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He also captained the England squad who won Silver at the 1986 Hockey World Cup. He was awarded the OBE for services to hockey. Dodds was born in the English city of York, and was educated at Kingston Grammar School and at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He currently works as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, England. Dodds has played club hockey for Reading and Southgate hockey clubs. Derek Day
Sir Derek Malcolm Day (29 November 1927 – 7 March 2015) was a British diplomat and field hockey player who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics. He was educated at Hurstpierpoint College and St Catharine's College, Cambridge. Darren Cheesman (born 23 February 1986 in Hackney, London) is an ex-England and Great Britain Hockey field hockey International who is now a High Performance Coach for England Hockey and FIH, as well as a Coach Educator for FIH.
