Southern Metropolitan Football League
The Southern Metropolitan Football League (SMFL) was an Australian rules football competition based in the southern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia until it folded at the end of the 1986 season. It first formed in 1912 as the Sturt Football Association, and during its history was also known as the Mid-Southern Football Association (1920-1930), Glenelg District Football Association (1931–1949), Glenelg-South-West District Football Association (1950–1966) and Glenelg-South Adelaide Football Association (1967–1983), before finally being named Southern Metropolitan Football League (1984–1986). The association first affiliated with the South Australian Football League in 1921. In 1927, the association made a special request to the SAFL for financial assistance. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. The Adelaide Footy League, formerly known as the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL), is a semi-professional Australian rules football competition based in Adelaide, South Australia. Comprising sixty-seven member clubs playing over one hundred and ten matches per week, the SAAFL is one of Australia's largest Australian rules football associations. The league currently provides competition across eight Senior divisions with Reserves grades, accompanied by a separate C grade competition, all from Divisions 1 to 7. Happy Valley Football Club
The Happy Valley Football Club is an Australian rules football club that competes in the Southern Football League. History The club first formed in 1952 playing in the former Hills Central Football League. In 1964, Happy Valley transferred to the Glenelg-South-West District Football Association and adopted the colours Black and Gold to avoid a clash with the Glandore club (having previously worn Blue and Gold). In 1980, Happy Valley joined the Southern Football League Division 2 competition and in 1984 were promoted to Division 1. Goodwood Saints Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Adelaide. The team competes in the Adelaide Footy League. The club dominated the Amateur League in the mid to late 2000s, winning five straight Division 1 grand finals from 2005 to 2009. Glandore Football Club
Kaurna Eagles Football Club was an Australian rules football club based in Mawson Lakes, South Australia that folded at the end of the 2007 South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL) season. History The club was established in 1958 as the Glandore Football Club based at Glandore Oval in the suburb of Glandore, south of Adelaide. Upon establishment, Glandore joined the Glenelg-South-West District Football Association and had almost instant success, winning the A1 premiership in 1961, their fourth season. Glandore remained in that competition (which changed names a couple of times), until the end of the then 1984 Southern Metropolitan Football League season. In 1985 the club moved to the South Australian Amateur Football League where it started in the A6 division, where it gradually made its way up the divisions until it reached Division 1 in 2000. The Flagstaff Hill Football Club (also known as the Flagstaff Hill Falcons) is an Australian rules football club originally formed as Brighton Methodist Football Club based at Mitchell Park in 1963 in the former United Churches Football League. In 1975, Brighton Methodist FC shifted to Mawson High School Oval and in 1977 was renamed the Brighton Tigers Football Club. In 1978 Brighton Tigers FC joined the Glenelg South Football Association and the following year was renamed to Flagstaff Hill Football Club. The Colonel Light Gardens Football Club is an Australian rules football club that plays in Division 5, Division 5 Reserves and C-Grade Division 5 of the South Australian Amateur Football League. They are known as the 'Lions'. Clarendon Football Club
The Clarendon Football Club was an Australian rules football based in the township of Clarendon, South Australia. The first record of Clarendon was in the Alexandra Football Association from 1913 to 1915, the three seasons that competition was in existence, winning the first and last premierships. After the First World War, Clarendon reformed and joined the Mid-Southern Football Association. Clarendon joined the Southern Football Association in 1935, lasting only two seasons before shifting to the Hills Central Football Association. Clarendon were associated with the Hills Central Association over the next 26 years, dropping to the B-Grade competition at times. The Bridgewater-Callington Raiders is an Australian rules football club based in the towns of Bridgewater and Callington in South Australia, playing in Division 1 of the Hills Football League. History Bridgewater Football Club The Bridgewater Football Club was founded in 1956 although football was played in the town back in 1895 when there was a local team that existed right up until the 1940s.
