Southern Deer Mouse
The southern deermouse or southern deer mouse (''Peromyscus labecula'') is a species of rodent in the family Cricetidae. It is found in the United States and Mexico. Taxonomy The species was originally thought to be conspecific with the North American deermouse (now eastern deermouse), ''P. maniculatus'', as ''P. m. labecula'', ''P. m. blandus'', and ''P. m. fulvus''. However, later studies found these subspecies to together comprise a distinct species from ''P. maniculatus'', and they were split from ''maniculatus'' in a study published in 2019 as ''P. labecula'', which was followed by the American Society of Mammalogists. Daniel Giraud Elliot
Daniel Giraud Elliot (March 7, 1835 – December 22, 1915) was an American zoologist and the founder of the American Ornithologist Union. Life He was born in New York City on March 7, 1835, to George and Rebecca Elliot. In 1858, he married Ann Eliza Henderson. From 1869 to 1879, he was in London and established strong links to British ornithologists and naturalists. Elliot used his wealth to publish a series of sumptuous color-plate books on birds and other animals. Elliot wrote the text himself and commissioned artists such as Joseph Wolf and Joseph Smit, both of whom had worked for John Gould, to provide the illustrations. ''Peromyscus'' is a genus of rodents. They are commonly referred to as deer mice or deermice, not to be confused with the chevrotain or "mouse deer". They are New World mice only distantly related to the common house and laboratory mouse, ''Mus musculus''. From this relative, ''Peromyscus'' species are distinguished by relatively larger eyes, and also often two-tone coloring, with darker colors over the dorsum (back), and white abdominal and limb hair-coloring. In reference to the coloring, the word ''Peromyscus'' comes from Greek words meaning "booted mouse". The black-eared mouse (''Peromyscus melanotis''), or black-eared deer mouse, is a species of rodent in the family Cricetidae, native to North America. Description The black-eared mouse is one of the smaller species in the genus ''Peromyscus'', measuring in total length, including a relatively short tail, long. The fur is tawny to yellow-brown over most of the body, fading from a darker shade on the back to paler on the flanks. The under parts and feet are pure white, with a clear dividing line from the tawny fur elsewhere. A narrow ring of dusky fur is found around the eyes, while the ears are dark brown to black, with white edges.
