South West Rugby League
The South West Rugby League (SWRL) also known as the ''South West Men's League'', is a rugby league competition for teams in the South West of England. It was formerly part of the Rugby League Conference. The SWRL is a semi-autonomous league with a five-member committee under an Rugby Football League (RFL) appointed chairman. The SWRL has five member clubs from Devon and Cornwall. History The Rugby League Conference was founded in 1997 as the ''Southern Conference'', a 10-team pilot league for teams in the South of England and the English Midlands. The conference made the leap from 30 to 52 teams in 2003 and a South West Division appeared for the first time. It disappeared in 2004 as South West teams took part in the Western Division and Cardiff Demons joined the newly created Welsh Division. Conference League South
The Southern Conference League is a British rugby league division in the Rugby Football League's tier 4. It is the highest level of amateur rugby league in the South of England and South Wales. It was one of the leagues that replaced Rugby League Conference. The competition was first played between 2012 and 2016, and was relaunched in 2019 after a two-year hiatus. Exeter Centurions
Exeter Centurions are a rugby league team based in Exeter, Devon. They play in the South West Rugby League. History ''Exeter Centurions'' were formed by Basingstoke Beasts founder Joe Catcheside. They joined the newly formed South West Division of the Rugby League Conference in 2007. In their first two seasons, Exeter only won one matc Exeter co-hosted the 2009 South West Nines competition and reached the final before losing to Exeter University at Duckes Meadow. In the regular season, the club's performance improved significantly, finishing in third in the league and reaching the SW Cup Final, which they lost against East Devon Eagles at Plymouth Albion's Brickfields ground. East Devon Eagles
East Devon Eagles are a rugby league team based in Exmouth, Devon. They play in the South West Division of the Rugby League Conference. History After a campaign by the Rugby Football League to form new clubs in the South West a rugby league game was staged between East Devon Eagles and Devon Sharks, then based at Newton Abbot. The Eagles were Devon Cup winners in 2006. They joined the newly formed South West Division of the Rugby League Conference in 2007. They won the Devon Challenge Cup in a final against Plymouth Titans that was featured on Sky Sports. East Devon Eagles finished level on points with Devon Sharks who they beat 38-22 in a semi-final play-off. They won the RLC South West Division in 2008 and made it to the final of the Devon Cup but lost 31-20 to Plymouth Titans. Gloucestershire Warriors
Gloucestershire Warriors RLFC are a rugby league team from the county of Gloucestershire in England. They play in the Conference League South and in 2006 made their debut in the Challenge Cup. History ''Cheltenham Warriors'' were formed in 1997 and took part in the second season of the Rugby League Conference. They played at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham, chosen as the venue for the inaugural Grand Final of the conference. Warriors won the Central Division in their second season in 1999. In 2000, the club moved to a new home at Chosen Hill Former Pupils RFC and changed its name to the ''Gloucestershire Warriors'' to reflect the fact that it was attracting players from throughout the county. Cardiff Demons
The Cardiff Demons RLFC name has been used multiple times over the years. Firstly for a now-defunct men's rugby league side, and subsequently for a women's rugby league side who began in 2021. The men's sids played out of St. Peters RFC in the east of Cardiff, Wales and played in the Welsh Premier of the Rugby League Conference. The women's team on the other hand compete in the RFL Women's Super League South since its inaugural season in June 2021. Men's Team: 1997-2015 History ''Cardiff Demons'' were formed in 1997 as an Academy level club, competing in the Lower Division of the Rugby League Academy competition against young players from professional outfits in the North of England. The Demons reached the Grand Final of the Academy Division Two in their second season but lost to Hunslet Hawks. Rugby league nines (or simply nines) is a version of rugby league football played with nine players on each side. Plymouth Rugby League Football Club is a rugby league club based in Plymouth. The club is a member of the South West Rugby League, playing home matches at Horsham Fields, Plymouth. History History of rugby league in the South West The first attempt at forming a club was in the Northern Union days of 1912 when in a dispute over inducements to players, attempts were made to form a Western League of clubs in Devon and Cornwall.
