Sol Spiegelman
Sol Spiegelman (December 14, 1914 – January 21, 1983) was an American molecular biologist. He developed the technique of nucleic acid hybridization, which helped to lay the groundwork for advances in recombinant DNA technology. Early life and education Spiegelman was born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1914. He attended the City College of New York and was initially interested in biology, but found the courses uninspiring and instead chose to focus on math and physics. During his undergraduate work he took a leave of absence to work in a biology laboratory, where he studied the genetics of bacteria. He graduated in 1939 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He then began his graduate studies at Columbia University in 1940, studying cellular physiology under the supervision of H.B. Steinbach. Kimball Chase Atwood III (1921 – October 13, 1992) was an American geneticist who spent much of his academic career at the University of Illinois and later at Columbia University Medical School. Early life and education Atwood was born in 1921 in New York City. He grew up in the city and remained there for his education, receiving his B.A. from Columbia University in 1942. He trained as a physician and received his MD from New York University School of Medicine, but pursued basic research rather than clinical work following a short residency at Bellevue Hospital. Academic career Atwood worked with Francis J. Ryan in the zoology department at Columbia University, focused on laboratory demonstration of natural selection in bacteria. Spiegelman Monster
Spiegelman's Monster is the name given to an RNA chain of only 218 nucleotides that is able to be reproduced by the RNA replication enzyme RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, also called RNA replicase. It is named after its creator, Sol Spiegelman, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who first described it in 1965. Description Spiegelman introduced RNA from a simple bacteriophage Qβ (Qβ) into a solution which contained Qβ's RNA replicase, some free nucleotides, and some salts. In this environment, the RNA started to be replicated. After a while, Spiegelman took some RNA and moved it to another tube with fresh solution. This process was repeated. Shorter RNA chains were able to be replicated faster, so the RNA became shorter and shorter as selection favored speed. Bacteriophage Qβ
Bacteriophage Qbeta (''Qubevirus durum''), commonly referred to as Qbeta or Qβ, is a positive-strand RNA virus which infects bacteria that have F-pili, most commonly ''Escherichia coli''. Its linear genome is packaged into an icosahedral capsid with a diameter of 28 nm. Bacteriophage Qβ enters its host cell after binding to the side of the F-pilus. Genetics The genome of Qβ is approximately 4,217 nucleotides, depending on the source which sequenced the virus.
