Skælskør
Skælskør () is a town in Zealand, Denmark. It is located in Slagelse Municipality. Until 2007 Skælskør was the seat of Skælskør Municipality. The town is located 17 km southwest of Slagelse and 12 km southeast of Korsør. Skælskør is home to one of Denmark's largest breweries, the Harboe Brewery. History Historically Skælskør was a harbour for traffic between Zealand and Funen, but Korsør took over when the harbour there was settled. Skælskør Fjord is difficult to navigate, and was one of the last waters in Denmark that legally required a pilot on recreational boats. Saint Nicholas Church Saint Nicholas Church (Danish: ''Sankt Nicolai Kirke''), also known as Skælskør Church, is located centrally in Skælskør. Slagelse Municipality
Slagelse Municipality is a municipality ( Danish: '' kommune'') in Region Zealand on the west coast of the island of Zealand (Danish: ''Sjælland'') in Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 571 km². The municipality borders Kalundborg Municipality to the north, Sorø Municipality to the north-east, Næstved Municipality to the south-east and connects to Nyborg Municipality via the Great Belt Bridge. The main city and the site of the municipal council is the city of Slagelse. The mayor has since 2017 been John Dyrby Paulsen, a member of the Social Democratic political party. The municipality include the inhabited islands of Omø, Agersø and Glænø, as well as the uninhabited islands of Sprogø, Østerfed, Stenfed, Ormø, Fuglehøj, Sandholm, Kidholm and Fugleholm. Skælskør Municipality
Until January 1, 2007 Skælskør Municipality was a municipality (Danish: '' kommune'') in the former West Zealand County, on the southwestern coast of the island of Zealand, in eastern Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 170.02 km2, and had a total population of 11,928 (2006). Its last mayor was Hans Ole Drost, a member of the Venstre. Skælskør Municipality bordered Korsør and Hashøj Municipality to the north and Fuglebjerg Municipality to the east. The municipality included the islands of Agersø, Omø and Glænø. To the west is the Great Belt (Danish: ''Storebælt''), the strait that separates Zealand and the island of Funen (Danish. Henrik Brodersen
Henrik Urban Brodersen (born 3 June 1964 in Skælskør) is a Danish politician, who was a member of the Folketing for the Danish People's Party from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2019. Political career Brodersen sat in the municipal council of Skælskør Municipality from 2002 to 2006, where the municipality was merged with Slagelse, Hashøj and Korsør Municipality to form a new Slagelse Municipality. Brodersen has been in the new Slagelse Municipality's municipal council since its foundation in 2007. From 2014 to 2015 he sat in the regional council of Region Zealand. Brodersen first entered parliament as a substitute member three times during the 2005–2007 term: from 1 March to 16 June 2005, 27 October to 4 November 2005 and 13 March to 28 May 2007. Hornung & Møller
Hornung & Møller was a Danish piano factory that operated from 1827 to 1972. History Hornung & Møller dominated the piano industry in the mid-1800s and introduced the cast iron frame. The company was founded by Conrad Christian Hornung (b Skælskør July 1801-Copenhagen 11 June 1873) a hat-maker from Skælskør, who became interested in piano making during a visit to Germany. After studying in Germany, he returned to Denmark, where he produced his first piano in 1827 and established a shop in his native town of Skælskør. The company moved to Slagelse in 1834 and to Copenhagen in 1842. In 1851, he transferred the entire company to his employee Hans Peter Møller, whose name was added to the company's name. At Møller 's death in 1859, the company was led by his widow, with his 20-year-old son Frederik Møller as general manager. Slagelse
Slagelse () is a town on Zealand, Denmark. The town is the seat of Slagelse Municipality, and is the biggest town of the municipality. It is located 15 km east of Korsør, 16 km north-east of Skælskør, 33 km south-east of Kalundborg and 14 km west of Sorø. History Slagelse has been inhabited since at least the Viking Age, where it was a Pagan site. Trelleborg, a ring castle, was built near the current location of Slagelse in 980, which made the location strategically important. A church was built at Slagelse's current location in the 1000s. Around this time, coins were minted in Slagelse. Antvorskov was built in the 1100s by Valdemar I, who had recently acquired Zealand. Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil (born 17 January 1977 in Skælskør) is a Danish politician, who is a member of the Folketing for the Social Democrats political party. From 2019 to 2022, she has served as Minister of Children and Education. She was elected into parliament at the 2011 Danish general election. Whigfield is an Italian dance act fronted by Danish singer, songwriter and record producer Sannie Charlotte Carlson (born 11 April 1970), known by her various stage names including Whigfield, Naan, or simply Sannie. Andreas Bjørn
Andreas Bjørn (28 October 1703 – 27 January 1750) was a Danish merchant, shipbuilder and ship owner. Early life Andreas Bjørn was born in Skælskør to Mads Andersen Bjørn and Karen Pedersdatter. He settled as a merchant in Copenhagen in 1730 where he soon achieved success in the timber trade. From 1731 he supplied the Royal Danish Navy with provisions, cannons and large quantities of timber and from 1739 he also supplied the Royal Danish Army with cannons. Ship building In 1735, Andreas Bjørn obtained permission from King Christian VI to reclaim an area north of Christianshavn where he established a shipyard. It became the largest shipyard in Denmark of its day, launching 50 ships until Bjørn's death 1750, including the 44-canon naval ship ''Copenhagen Castle'' (''Kjøbenhavns Slot''). Haldor Topsøe (1842–1935)
Haldor Frederik Axel Topsøe (29 April 1842 in Skælskør, Slagelse Municipality, Denmark – 31 December 1935 in Frederiksberg, Denmark) was a Danish chemist and crystallographer. He is grandfather of the engineer Haldor Topsøe (1913–2013) who has got his name from his grandfather, and great-grandfather of the mathematician Flemming Topsøe (born 25 August 1938) and the engineer Henrik Topsøe (born 10 August 1944). Topsøe took Magisterkonferens in chemistry in 1866 and doctorate for a chemical-crystallographical work of selenium-sour salts. He worked as assistant at the Natural History Museum 1863–1867 and at the chemistry laboratory of University of Copenhagen 1867–1873. Vilhelm Christian Sigurd Topsøe (5 October 1840 – 11 July 1881) was a Danish novelist and journalist. He is remembered in particular for ''Jason med det gyldne Skind'' (Jason and the Golden Fleece, 1875) and ''Nutidsbilleder'' (Images of Today, 1878). Bertel Bruun
Bertel Bruun (November 13, 1937 – September 21, 2011) was a naturalist, international conservationist and neurologist. Bruun wrote many books and was the co-author of The Golden Field Guide to Birds of North America first published in 1966. He later became very involved in conservation efforts, most especially in the Middle East where he served as a liaison between the Israel and Egypt to promote the preservation of wildlife in the Sinai Peninsula when the region was handed back to Egypt after the 1978 Camp David Peace Treaty.
