The island municipality is located in the Midhordland district of the county, sitting in a large group of islands immediately northwest of the city of Bergen. The administrative centre of the municipality is the urban village of Kleppestø on the southeastern shore of the island of Askøy. Meland is a former municipality in the Nordhordland district in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1923 until its dissolution on 1 January 2020 when it was merged into the new Alver Municipality in Vestland county. The municipality was located about 30 minutes north of the city of Bergen in Western Norway. Alversund is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1885 until 1964. It was located in the southwestern part of the mainland portion of the present-day Alver Municipality in Vestland county. It originally included area on the island of Holsnøy as well, but that was later separated. Alversund covered upon its dissolution in 1964. Askøy is an island in Vestland county, Norway. The island is located entirely inside the municipality of Askøy, and the island makes up about 88% of the municipal area and is home to about 96% of the municipal residents. Herdlefjorden
Herdlefjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. The long fjord runs between the islands of Holsnøy (in Alver Municipality) and Askøy (in Askøy Municipality). The fjord connects with the Salhusfjorden and the Byfjorden on the southeast end and it flows out into the Hjeltefjorden on the northwest end of the fjord. The fjord is named after the island of Herdla, located at the northern end of the fjord. The fjord leads directly from the sea to the port of the city of Bergen, however at the northern end of the Herdlefjorden there are several small islands which cause a narrow bottleneck which congests sea traffic.
