Alversund (municipality)
Alversund is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1885 until 1964. It was located in the southwestern part of the mainland portion of the present-day Alver Municipality in Vestland county. It originally included area on the island of Holsnøy as well, but that was later separated. Alversund covered upon its dissolution in 1964. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Alversund, where Alversund Church is located. Name The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old Alver farm ( non, Alviðra) since the first Alversund Church was built there. The meaning of the farm name is "all weather" (meaning "weather from all directions" - describing a farm with an exposed and unsheltered site). The last element is ''sund'' which means "sound" or "strait", referring to the nearby Alverstraumen strait. Nordhordland
Nordhordland is a traditional district in the western part of Norway. The district consists of the northern portion of the old Hordaland county (now in Vestland county), north of the city of Bergen. It includes the municipalities Alver, Austrheim, Fedje, Masfjorden, Modalen, Osterøy, and Vaksdal. The district roughly corresponds to the Nordhordland prosti, a Church of Norway deanery and also to the municipalities that fall under the Nordhordland District Court. Alversund Kyrkje A
Alversund is a village in Alver municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the mainland of the Lindås peninsula, along the shore of the Alverstraumen strait. The village sits between the villages of Alverstraumen (across the strait) and Alver (to the south), forming a large village area that is often referred to as Alversund. The Alversund Bridge spans the Alverstraumen strait between Alversund and the village area of Alverstraumen located on the southern tip of the island of Radøy, creating a vital connection between Radøy and the mainland. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Lindås
Lindås is a former municipality in the Nordhordland district in the old Hordaland county, Norway. It existed from 1838 until its dissolution on 1 January 2020 when it was merged into the new Alver Municipality. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Knarvik, located in the southwestern part of the municipality. Other notable villages in the municipality included Alversund, Isdalstø, Lindås, Ostereidet, and Seim. Sæbø (municipality)
Sæbø is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1924 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located in what is now Alver Municipality in Vestland county. Modalen
Modalen is a municipality in the Nordhordland district in the central part of Vestland county in Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Mo. The other main village in the municipality is Øvre Helland. Most of the residents of Modalen live in the main Modalen valley which extends eastwards from the end of the Romarheimsfjorden. Askøy is an island in Vestland county, Norway. The island is located entirely inside the municipality of Askøy, and the island makes up about 88% of the municipal area and is home to about 96% of the municipal residents. In 2014, there were 26,230 people living on the island. Since the opening of the Askøy Bridge leading to the mainland in the city of Bergen in 1992, the population has increased rapidly.
