Herdlefjorden
Herdlefjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. The long fjord runs between the islands of Holsnøy (in Alver Municipality) and Askøy (in Askøy Municipality). The fjord connects with the Salhusfjorden and the Byfjorden on the southeast end and it flows out into the Hjeltefjorden on the northwest end of the fjord. The fjord is named after the island of Herdla, located at the northern end of the fjord. The fjord leads directly from the sea to the port of the city of Bergen, however at the northern end of the Herdlefjorden there are several small islands which cause a narrow bottleneck which congests sea traffic. Byfjorden (Hordaland)
Byfjorden (Norwegian Nynorsk and Bokmål: /byːfjɔrn/, /-ɔɾn/; Bokmål: also /-ɔɳ/; Bergensk: usually /-ɔʁn/) is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. The long fjord separates the island of Askøy from the mainland Bergen Peninsula, passing right north of the city of Bergen on the mainland. The western entrance to Byfjorden is between the village of Drotningsvik in Laksevåg borough, Bergen, and the village of Marikoven on the island of Askøy in Askøy municipality. The northern entrance to the fjord is between the village of Ask on Askøy and Mjølkeråen in the borough of Åsane in Bergen. On the northern end, it connects with the Salhusfjorden and Herdlefjorden. There is one road crossing over the Byfjorden: the Askøy Bridge, which crosses near the western end of the fjord. Askøy (island)
Askøy is an island in Vestland county, Norway. The island is located entirely inside the municipality of Askøy, and the island makes up about 88% of the municipal area and is home to about 96% of the municipal residents. In 2014, there were 26,230 people living on the island. Since the opening of the Askøy Bridge leading to the mainland in the city of Bergen in 1992, the population has increased rapidly. The island is named after the old Ask farm along the eastern coast of the island. The village is the site of the old Ask Church. The island municipality is located in the Midhordland district of the county, sitting in a large group of islands immediately northwest of the city of Bergen. Salhusfjorden
Salhusfjorden is a long fjord and sound between Bergen Municipality and Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. To the west, it starts between the villages of Salhus and Frekhaug, where the Byfjorden meets the Herdlefjorden. To the east, the fjord ends between the village of Knarvik and the Hordvikneset peninsula, where the Osterfjorden runs northeast, the Sørfjorden runs southeast, and the Radfjorden runs north. The fjord is up to deep. It acts as one of the borders between the districts of Midhordland to the south and Nordhordland to the north. The islands of Holsnøy and Flatøy lie along the northern side of the fjord. Salhusfjorden is crossed by the Nordhordland Bridge, a combined pontoon and cable stayed bridge. Herdla (island)
Herdla is an island in the municipality of Askøy in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies just north of the larger island of Askøy and just west of the island of Holsnøy. The island is surrounded by the Herdlefjorden and Hjeltefjorden. The island of Herdla was part of the municipality of Herdla until 1 January 1964 when it was merged into Askøy. The island has a nature reserve with 220 registered species of birds. During the Second World War, it was the site of Herdla Airport and some coastal fortifications. Vestland
Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The administrative centre of the county is the city of Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based, but the County Governor is based in Hermansverk. Holsnøy
Holsnøy is an island in Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies to the north/west of the mainland, between the islands of Radøy to the north and Askøy to the south. The highest point on the island is the tall Eldsfjellet, a mountain located about north of the village of Rossland. The island is hilly and marshy, with the majority of the residents living along the southern shore. The largest settlement on the island is the village of Frekhaug on the southern shore. Hjeltefjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. The long fjord runs north–south between many islands leading from the open ocean to the city of Bergen. It passes through the municipalities of Fedje, Øygarden, Alver, and Askøy. Its name is derived from ''Hjaltland'', the Old Norse name for Shetland.
