Single-cell Organism
A unicellular organism, also known as a single-celled organism, is an organism that consists of a single cell (biology), cell, unlike a multicellular organism that consists of multiple cells. Organisms fall into two general categories: prokaryotic organisms and eukaryotic organisms. All prokaryotes are unicellular and are classified into bacteria and archaea. Many eukaryotes are multicellular, but some are unicellular such as protozoa, unicellular algae, and unicellular fungi. Unicellular organisms are thought to be the oldest form of life, with early protocells possibly emerging 3.8–4.0 billion years ago. Although some prokaryotes live in Colony (biology), colonies, they are not specialised cells with differing functions. These organisms live together, and each cell must carry out all life processes to survive. In contrast, even the simplest multicellular organisms have cells that depend on each other to survive. Most multicellular organisms have a unicellular life-cycle ...

Single-cell Protein
Single-cell proteins (SCP) or microbial proteins refer to edible unicellular microorganisms. The biomass or protein extract from pure or mixed cultures of algae, yeasts, fungi or bacteria may be used as an ingredient or a substitute for protein-rich foods, and is suitable for human consumption or as animal feeds. Industrial agriculture is marked by a high water footprint, high land use, biodiversity destruction, general environmental degradation and contributes to climate change by emission of a third of all greenhouse gases; production of SCP does not necessarily exhibit any of these serious drawbacks. As of today, SCP is commonly grown on agricultural waste products, and as such inherits the ecological footprint and water footprint of industrial agriculture. However, SCP may also be produced entirely independent of agricultural waste products through autotrophic growth. Thanks to the high diversity of microbial metabolism, autotrophic SCP provides several different modes of growth, ...

Single-unit Recording
In neuroscience, single-unit recordings provide a method of measuring the electro-physiological responses of a single neuron using a microelectrode system. When a neuron generates an action potential, the signal propagates down the neuron as a current which flows in and out of the cell through excitable membrane regions in the soma and axon. A microelectrode is inserted into the brain, where it can record the rate of change in voltage with respect to time. These microelectrodes must be fine-tipped, high-impedance conductors; they are primarily glass micro-pipettes, metal microelectrodes made of platinum, tungsten, iridium or even iridium oxide. Microelectrodes can be carefully placed close to the cell membrane, allowing the ability to record extracellularly. Single-unit recordings are widely used in cognitive science, where it permits the analysis of human cognition and cortical mapping. This information can then be applied to brain–machine interface (BMI) technologies for bra ...

Single Cell Sequencing
Single-cell sequencing examines the sequence information from individual cells with optimized next-generation sequencing technologies, providing a higher resolution of cellular differences and a better understanding of the function of an individual cell in the context of its microenvironment. For example, in cancer, sequencing the DNA of individual cells can give information about mutations carried by small populations of cells. In development, sequencing the RNAs expressed by individual cells can give insight into the existence and behavior of different cell types. In microbial systems, a population of the same species can appear genetically clonal. Still, single-cell sequencing of RNA or epigenetic modifications can reveal cell-to-cell variability that may help populations rapidly adapt to survive in changing environments. Background A typical human cell consists of about 2 x 3.3 billion base pairs of DNA and 600 million mRNA bases. Usually, a mix of millions of cells is used in ...

Single Cell Epigenomics
Single cell epigenomics is the study of epigenomics (the complete set of epigenetic modifications on the genetic material of a cell) in individual cells by single cell sequencing. Since 2013, methods have been created including whole-genome single-cell bisulfite sequencing to measure DNA methylation, whole-genome ChIP-sequencing to measure histone modifications, whole-genome ATAC-seq to measure chromatin accessibility and chromosome conformation capture. Single-cell DNA methylome sequencing Single cell DNA genome sequencing quantifies DNA methylation. This is similar to single cell genome sequencing, but with the addition of a bisulfite treatment before sequencing. Forms include whole genome bisulfite sequencing, and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing Single-cell ATAC-seq ATAC-seq stands for Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin with high throughput sequencing. It is a technique used in molecular biology to identify accessible DNA regions, equivalent to DNase ...

Single-cell Transcriptomics
Single-cell transcriptomics examines the gene expression level of individual cells in a given population by simultaneously measuring the RNA concentration (conventionally only messenger RNA (mRNA)) of hundreds to thousands of genes. Single-cell transcriptomics makes it possible to unravel heterogeneous cell populations, reconstruct cellular developmental pathways, and model transcriptional dynamics — all previously masked in bulk RNA sequencing. Background The development of high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and microarrays has made gene expression analysis a routine. RNA analysis was previously limited to tracing individual transcripts by Northern blots or quantitative PCR. Higher throughput and speed allow researchers to frequently characterize the expression profiles of populations of thousands of cells. The data from bulk assays has led to identifying genes differentially expressed in distinct cell populations, and biomarker discovery. These studies are limited as ...

Single Cell (comic)
''Star Wars Tales'' is a comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics, beginning on September 29, 1999, and completing its run on July 13, 2005. Each issue is 64 pages and features a few unrelated stories from various eras of the ''Star Wars'' timeline. Stories from issues #1–20 were retroactively labelled "Infinities", placing them outside the ''Star Wars'' canon, while those of issues #21–24 were considered to be within continuity, unless labelled otherwise. References to the stories were made within the Expanded Universe, the entirety of which was deemed non-canon by Lucasfilm in 2014. The entire series was collected into six trade paperbacks, comprising four issues each. Issues and their canonicity Volume 1 Issue #1 ''Life, Death, and the Living Force'' : Script: Jim Woodring : Pencils: Robert Teranishi : Colors: Christopher Chuckry : 14 pages : Galactic Year: 33 BBY : Preceded by: A Summer's Dream : Followed by: Incident at Horn Station ''Mara Jade ...

Single Cell Orchestra
Single Cell Orchestra is the performing name of Miguel Fierro (born Miguel Angelo Fierro), a San Francisco-born musician who has worked for many years in electronic music and techno music, techno. His first successful single was "Transmit Liberation", an underground hit that proved influential in the development of trip hop. His first full-length was ''Dead Vent 7'' (1995 in music, 1995), followed by ''Single Cell Orchestra (album), Single Cell Orchestra'' (1996 in music, 1996). Later that year, he collaborated with Daum Bentley (of Freaky Chakra (band), Freaky Chakra) to produce an album entitled ''Freaky Chakra vs Single Cell Orchestra''.
