Simuna, Estonia
Simuna () is a small borough in Väike-Maarja Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. It had a population of 454 as of 2011. Before 2005 Simuna was the seat of Avanduse Parish, which was merged with Väike-Maarja Parish. One of the points of the Struve Geodetic Arc is located in Simuna. Avanduse manor Avanduse Manor () is located in Simuna. It was first mentioned in written records in 1494. The present-day manor building was erected in 1679–1684 by the master builder Gerd Vorberg from Reval (Tallinn), who had been commissioned by the owner of the Avanduse estate, Gideon von Fock. The building has been significantly rebuilt since then; the most recent changes were made by the architect Rudolf von Engelhardt in 1890. The admiral and geographer Friedrich von Lütke (1797–1882) was one of the best-known owners of the estate, and there is a plaque dedicated to him on the manor building's wall. Estonian War Of Independence
The Estonian War of Independence, also known as the War of Freedom in Estonia, was a defensive campaign of the Estonian Army and its allies, most notably the United Kingdom, against the Soviet Russian westward offensive of 1918–1919 and the 1919 aggression of the pro–German '' Baltische Landeswehr''. The campaign was the struggle of the newly established democratic state of Estonia for independence in the aftermath of World War I. It resulted in a victory for Estonia and was concluded in the 1920 Treaty of Tartu. Leo Sepp
Leo Sepp (7 November 1892 in Simuna, Estonia – 13 December 1941 in Solikamsk, Russia, USSR) was an Estonian politician, businessman and writer. From 1924 until 1927 he was Minister of Finance and from 1938 to 1940 Minister of Economic Affairs of Estonia. From 1921 until 1924, he was the director and chairman of the Bank of Estonia. From 1933 until 1938 he was the director of Baltic Cotton Factory. In 1937, using the pen name Rein Sarvesaare, Sepp wrote a theatre play '' Kaupo''; and it was published by the Estonian Academic Artists' Association (EAKK). Following the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, Sepp was arrested by the NKVD, deported to Soviet Russia, and imprisoned in the Gulag camp system. Magnus Georg Paucker
Magnus Georg von Paucker (; – ) was a Baltic German astronomer and mathematician and the first Demidov Prize winner in 1832 for his work ''Handbuch der Metrologie Rußlands und seiner deutschen Provinzen''. Biography Paucker was born in the small Estonian village of Sankt Simonis (now ). In 1805, he began his studies in astronomy and physics at the University of Dorpat, where his professors included Georg Friedrich Parrot and Johann Wilhelm Andreas Pfaff. Between 1808 and 1809, Paucker took part in the surveying of the Emajõgi river which was the first geodetic expedition on the territory of Estonia. In 1809 he contributed to the construction of the first optical telegraph line in Russia from Saint Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo. In 1811 Paucker took over as a lecturer at the University of Dorpat, succeeding Ernst Friedrich Knorre.
