Magnus Georg Paucker
Magnus Georg von Paucker (russian: Магнус-Георг Андреевич Паукер, translit=Magnus-Georg Andreevič Pauker; – ) was a Baltic German astronomer and mathematician and the first Demidov Prize winner in 1832 for his work ''Handbuch der Metrologie Rußlands und seiner deutschen Provinzen''. Biography Paucker was born in the small Estonian village of Sankt Simonis (now ). In 1805, he began his studies in astronomy and physics at the University of Dorpat, where his professors included Georg Friedrich Parrot and Johann Wilhelm Andreas Pfaff. Between 1808–1809, Paucker took part in the surveying of the Emajõgi river which was the first geodetic expedition on the territory of Estonia. In 1809 he contributed to the construction of the first optical telegraph line in Russia from Saint Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo. Simuna, Estonia
Simuna is a small borough in Väike-Maarja Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. It had a population of 454 as of 2011. Before 2005 Simuna was the centre of Avanduse Parish which was merged to Väike-Maarja Parish. One of the points of the Struve Geodetic Arc is located in Simuna. Avanduse manor The manor of Avanduse (german: Awandus) is located in Simuna. It was first mentioned in written records in 1494. The present-day manor building was erected in 1679–1684 by master builder Gerd Vorberg from Reval (Tallinn) who had been commissionned by the owner of the Avanduse estate at the time, Gideon von Fock. The building has been significantly rebuilt since then; most recent changes were made by architect Rudolf von Engelhardt in 1890. Jelgava (; german: Mitau, ; see also other names) is a state city in central Latvia about southwest of Riga with 55,972 inhabitants (2019). It is the largest town in the region of Zemgale (Semigalia). Jelgava was the capital of the united Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (1578–1795) and the administrative center of the Courland Governorate (1795–1918). Ernst Friedrich Knorre
Ernst Christoph Friedrich Knorre (11 December 1759 – 1 December 1810) was a German-born astronomer who lived and worked in present-day Estonia as a founding professor of mathematics at the Universität Dorpat and chief ''observator'' for the Dorpat Observatory. His son Karl Friedrich Knorre and grandson Viktor Knorre were also notable astronomers. Recently NASA named an asteroid in honor of the three generations of Knorre astronomers. Life and work Knorre was born at Neuhaldensleben, near Magdeburg, in the German Empire.
