Simon Stead
Simon Trevor Stead (born 25 April 1982) is a British speedway team manager and former rider. Career Summary Born in Sheffield, Stead started his career at local track Sheffield Tigers before riding for Buxton Hitmen, Peterborough Panthers and Workington Comets. Stead signed for Belle Vue Aces prior to the start of the 2005 season and had three seasons with the club. In those three seasons he progressed from a reserve to a heat leader. For the 2008 season Stead joined the Coventry Bees on loan. In 2009 he signed a contract which involved him moving from Coventry to the Swindon Robins. He re-signed with Sheffield Tigers in 2013 with the option of doubling up with King's Lynn Stars, his season was cut short by a broken leg sustained while practising in June, and signed for Sheffield Tigers again in 2014 doubling up with Leicester Lions. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Elite League (speedway)
The Elite League was the top division of speedway league competition in the United Kingdom, governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). It was sponsored by Sky Sports until the end of the 2013 season. In 2016, the Elite League featured 8 teams, unlike 10 in 2014, during a season which ran between March and October. Each team had a designated race day on which they normally staged their home fixtures, and they regularly had home and away fixtures scheduled in the same week. Craven Shield
The Craven Shield and Young Shield were shortlived speedway end of season cup competitions in the United Kingdom governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). Craven Shield Named in memory of Peter Craven (twice FIM World Champion), who was killed after a racing accident in 1963, it was held from 1997 until 2008. It was the end of season competition for top eight clubs in the league standings of the newly formed Elite League (the highest tier of speedway). It was later a three-team tournament, with each team staging a leg on their own track and aggregate scores deciding the final placings. The format was changed in 2008 with three mini leagues of three teams with the best team overall of the three leagues progressing directly to the final. The SGB Championship Pairs Championship formerly the Premier League Pairs Championship (from 1997 to 2016) is a motorcycle speedway contest for the second tier teams in the SGB Championship in the United Kingdom. The teams consist of the top two riders from each club competing. The meetings comprise ten teams of two riders drawn into two qualifying groups. Rules Gate positions In the ''Qualification Heats'', riders are allocated starting gates. For the ''Semi-Finals'', the group winners have first choice of gate positions (A&C or B&D). The Elite League Pairs Championship was a motorcycle speedway contest between the top two riders from each club competing in the Elite League in the United Kingdom, staged from 2004 to 2011. History The Championship was a reincarnation of the British League Pairs Championship, which ran from 1976 until 1987. After the eighth running of the competition in 2011 the Championship was discontinued. However a one off Championship was held for the top tier once again in 2017 and was called the SGB Premiership Pairs Championship and won by the King's Lynn Stars riders Chris Holder & Robert Lambert. The Premier League Riders Championship was a contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest average points total from each club competing in the Premier League in the United Kingdom. The championship was inaugurated in 1995, the same year that the Premier League was formed. For its first two years, the Premier League was the top league in Britain. British Speedway Under 21 Championship
The British Speedway Under-21 Championship (also known as the British Junior Speedway Championship) is an annual speedway competition open to riders of British nationality aged at least fifteen on the date of the first meeting, and under twenty-one on 1 January in the year of the competition. The winner of the final is declared British Under-21 Champion. Previous winners include former World Champions Mark Loram and Gary Havelock. Format Sixteen riders plus three reserves take part in 20 heats with each rider facing each other once. The two riders which accumulate the highest number of points over the heats go straight to the final.
