British Speedway Under 21 Championship
The British Speedway Under-21 Championship (also known as the British Junior Speedway Championship) is an annual speedway competition open to riders of British nationality aged at least fifteen on the date of the first meeting, and under twenty-one on 1 January in the year of the competition. The winner of the final is declared British Under-21 Champion. Previous winners include former World Champions Mark Loram and Gary Havelock. Format Sixteen riders plus three reserves take part in 20 heats with each rider facing each other once. The two riders which accumulate the highest number of points over the heats go straight to the final. The next four highest point scorers take part in a race-off, with first and second place riders also progressing to the final. Qualification Seven riders are seeded straight to the final round while nine other riders qualify through three qualifying rounds held on a regional basis which use the same format as the final round. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . There are now both domestic and international competitions in a number of countries, including the Speedway World Cup, whilst the highest overall scoring individual in the Speedway Grand Prix events is pronounced the world champion. Leslie 'Les' Collins (born 24 May 1958) is a former speedway rider. He finished runner-up in the 1982 Speedway World Championship as well as winning the Intercontinental Final in 1982, the British Under-21 Championship in 1977 and the British League Riders' Championship in 1980. Career Crewe, Stoke & Belle Vue Born in Manchester, England, Collins started his career with the Crewe Kings before moving Belle Vue Aces. He was loaned to the Stoke Potters in 1976 but in 1977 he made a place with the Aces his own, riding alongside brother Peter and family friend Chris Morton. Colin Richardson (speedway Rider)
Colin Eric Richardson (born 24 November 1958 in London) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Early Life and Career Richardson was born on 24th November, 1958 in Lambeth, London. He attended Wick Hill Secondary Modern School in Bracknell from 1970 to 1972 and then Garth Hill Comprehensive School, also in Bracknell, from 1973 to 1977. His speedway career started when riding for Eastbourne Eagles in 1975 and Wimbledon Dons in 1976. Richardson enjoyed a very successful 1977 National League season, 1977 winning the British League Division Two Riders Championship, National League Riders' Championship, held at Wimbledon Stadium on 24 September 1977. In addition to the riders' title, he helped Eastbourne Eagles win the British League Division Two, National League and British League Division Two Knockout Cup, Knockout cup double. Michael Lee (speedway Rider)
Michael Andrew Lee (born 11 December 1958) is a British former international speedway rider who won the World Championship in 1980. A controversial character, he was banned for allegedly endangering other riders in the early eighties. Michael Lee is the son of former well known British Scrambler Andy Lee. Career Born in Cambridge, England, Lee began his professional speedway career in 1975 with Boston in the second division of speedway in the United Kingdom, the National League. In his first season, he recorded an impressive average points score of 9.13, he also rode part-time for top division team King's Lynn. In 1976, Lee moved full-time to British League team King's Lynn and finished the season with an average of 9.22, he was also the British Junior Champion that year. Joseph William Owen (born 13 September 1956) is a British former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Stephen John (Steve) Weatherley (born 26 November 1957 in Dartford, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider who was twice runner-up in the British Speedway Under 21 Championship. Neil Middleditch
Neil Middleditch (born 7 January 1957 in Wimborne, Dorset) is a former speedway rider and the team manager of the Poole Pirates. His father Ken was a former rider with the Poole Pirates. He was the team manager of the Great Britain national speedway team for seven years before resigning in February 2008, a position he has since resumed. Riding career Middleditch's riding career spanned from 1973 until 1986, riding for the Eastbourne Eagles, Poole Pirates, Reading Racers and the Arena Essex Hammers. In 1975 Middleditch became British Under-21 Champion and was third in the 1978 European Under-21 Championship final. He won the National League Riders' Championship at Brandon Stadium, held on 10 August 1985. Steve Bastable
Stephen Henry Bastable (born 16 September 1956, in Birmingham, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Family His father Harry Bastable, was also a speedway rider. Career Bastable spent the majority of his career with the Cradley Heathens but in three years with the Coventry Bees he scored almost one thousand points. In 1978, he won the British League Pairs Championship with Bruce Penhall, during the 1978 British League season. Three years later he won the 1981 British Speedway Championship. In 1988, he won the British League Division Two Pairs Championship, National League Pairs, partnering Graham Jones (speedway rider), Graham Jones for the Stoke Potters, during the 1988 National League season. Chris Morton
Christopher John Morton, MBE (born 22 July 1956) is a former motorcycle speedway rider. He rode bikes from a young age at the farm of Peter Collins' parents. Brief career summary Born in Davyhulme, Lancashire, Morton made his debut for Ellesmere Port Gunners (on loan from Belle Vue Aces) on 15 May 1973. He showed rapid improvement then following an injury to Aces Captain Chris Pusey in June 1973 he was drafted into the Belle Vue team scoring 6 points on his debut in an away meeting at Cradley Heath. The following season he became British Under-21 Champion at just 17 years of age. During the late 1970s, Morton was a guest resident international rider at the famous Rowley Park Speedway in Adelaide, South Australia where he often rode against the likes of home town hero John Boulger and Mildura's Phil Crump.
