Simon Mpata
Simon George Mpata (1942–1984) was a Tanzanian painter of the Tingatinga (painting), Tingatinga school. He was the youngest half-brother of Edward Tingatinga, founder of the school, and belonged to the restricted group of six students that were directly taught by Tingatinga himself. Among Tingatinga's students, Mpata is considered the most faithful to his teacher's style. Upon Edward Tingatinga's death, Mpata left Tanzania, moving to Nairobi, where he established his own studio. Mpata's art has received international acclaim, mostly thanks to Japanese magazine editor Kazumi Oguro, who was impressed by Mpata's art while visiting Kenya and later organized an exposition in New York City, New York and popularized Mpata's art in Japan. Tingatinga (painting)
Tingatinga (also spelt Tinga-tinga or Tinga Tinga) is a painting style that originated in East Africa. Tingatinga is one of the most widely represented forms of tourist-oriented paintings in Tanzania, Kenya and neighbouring countries. The genre is named after its founder, Tanzanian painter Edward Tingatinga. Tingatinga is traditionally made on masonite, using several layers of bicycle paint, which makes for brilliant and highly saturated colours. Many elements of the style are related to the requirements of the tourist-oriented market; for example, the paintings are usually small so they can be easily transported, and subjects are intended to appeal to Europeans and Americans (e.g. the big five and other wild fauna). In this sense, Tingatinga paintings can be considered a form of "airport painting". The drawings themselves can be described as both naïve and caricatural; humour and sarcasm are often explicit. Edward Tingatinga
Edward Saidi Tingatinga (1932–1972) was a Tanzanian painter, best known as the founder of the eponymous painting style and school. Biography Birth and family Tingatinga was born in 1932 in a village called Namochelia, in the Tunduru District of Ruvuma Region in southern Tanzania, near the border with northern Mozambique. A village by that name no longer exists; it may have ceased to exist in the 1960s as a consequence of the relocation of small villages that was part of the Ujamaa program of President Julius Nyerere. Today's settlements in that area include Mindu, Nakapanya and Mtonya. Many members of Edward Tingatinga's family (on the mother's side) still live in those villages; relatives from the father's side live in Ngapa, about 20 km north of Nakapanya. Nairobi ( ) is the capital and largest city of Kenya.
