Sigismondo Caula
Sigismondo Caula (1637–1724) was an Italian painter of the Baroque style. Caula was born in Modena, where he was the pupil of Jean Boulanger, but finished his studies at Venice, from the works of Titian and Tintoretto Tintoretto ( , , ; born Jacopo Robusti; late September or early October 1518Bernari and de Vecchi 1970, p. 83.31 May 1594) was an Italian painter identified with the Venetian school. His contemporaries both admired and criticized the speed with .... Besides his altar-pieces, he painted cabinet pictures for private collections. His best production was his large picture of ''St Charles Borromeo assisting the plague-stricken people of Modena'', which was painted, with great vigor and expression, for the church of San Carlo, Modena, but now at the Este Gallery at Modena. ''Sigismondo'' is an operatic 'dramma' in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa. The opera was not a success and Rossini later re-used some of its music in ''Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra'', ''The Barber of Seville'', and ''Adina''. Performance history ''Sigismondo'' was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, on 26 December 1814, with revivals in Cremona, Reggio Emilia, Padua and Senigallia (all in 1819), Florence and Siena (both in 1820) and finally in Bologna (1827). Its modern revival took place in Rovigo in 1992 (see recording details below). A cabinet painting (or "cabinet picture") is a small painting, typically no larger than two feet (0.6 meters) in either dimension, but often much smaller. The term is especially used for paintings that show full-length figures or landscapes at a small scale, rather than a head or other object painted nearly life-size. Galleria Estense
The Galleria Estense is an art gallery in the heart of Modena, centred around the collection of the d’Este family: rulers of Modena, Ferrara and Reggio from 1289 to 1796. Located on the top floor of the ''Palazzo dei Musei'', on the St. Augustine square, the museum showcases a vast array of works ranging from fresco and oil painting to marble, polychrome and terracotta sculpture; musical instruments; numismatics; curios and decorative antiques.
