Sian Welch
Sian Welch is an American former triathlete. Career She has been married since 1993 to former Australian professional triathlete Greg Welch. In 1994, she won the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco. In November 1996, she came in third in at the Cross Triathlon World Cup in Hawaii. In 1997 she became national triathlon champion on the short distance. In 2000, she ended her pro career - three months after her husband Greg announced his retirement. Ironman Hawaii 1997 In October 1997, she and her compatriot Wendy Ingraham delivered a thrilling duel for fourth place on the final stretch of the Ironman Hawaii , as the two were dehydrated and exhausted overturned and could only crawl to the finish on all fours. Gregory John Welch (born in 1964 in Campsie, Sydney), known as Greg Welch, is an Australian triathlete. He is known for having won "The Grand Slam", which includes the ITU Triathlon World Championships (1990), The Ironman World Championship (1994), the ITU Duathlon World Championships (1993) and the Long Course Triathlon World Championship (1994). Greg was an ambassador to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in 2000. Escape From Alcatraz (triathlon)
Escape from Alcatraz is the name for two different triathlons held in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The Escape from Alcatraz originated in 1981 as a private club event, beginning in San Francisco and ending in Marin County. The race split in 1983 with a separate commercial event open to the public, which is now an aquathlon (having dropped the biking section of a traditional triathlon) held on a shorter course entirely within San Francisco. However, a new public triathlon, also known by the name Escape from Alcatraz, is now run by IMG. Wendy is a given name now generally given to girls in English-speaking countries. In Britain, Wendy appeared as a masculine name in a parish record in 1615. The Ironman Australia is a yearly triathlon in May covering the Ironman distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.195 km running) on the East Coast of Australia. The event has been held in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, NSW since 2006 and prior to that it was held in Forster-Tuncurry, Forster / Tuncurry area.
